One of my absolute fave pastimes is trawling through the back-streets and alleyways of this fine city. Not the safest activity at times, as I have encountered my fair share of miscreants and hoons along the way. But, I love capturing the urban and grunge tonality and atmosphere this city has to offer. I’d love to publish a book of all the street-art that the graffiti capital of the world - Melbourne, has to offer. It truly is never ending and evolving. One week you may shoot a wall and if you return a week later, it will look completely different as new artwork has taken its place.

So today I was meeting with a potential client in the northern suburbs of Melbourne. I had a meeting with this young Melbourne band on Smith St in Fitzroy. The meeting went well and I am hopeful we will be able to successfully negotiate the terms and conditions for yours truly to help them with some branding and a website. But that’s another story.
After the meeting I went for a long walk along Smith St and just marveled at the urban diversity on show in this bohemian street. I haven’t ever really spent much time along Smith St as when I am usually in this neck of the woods, I frequent the trendier Brunswick St. There was a ton of street-art and graffiti on show… some truly gritty works on show.
So, if you want to see the results head on over to my flickr page for all the low-down.

Now this one looks real interesting. The by-line says it all… “He’s smart, good looking, and he’s got a great sense of humor. He’s Dexter, everyone’s favorite serial killer,†the series, according to Showtime, revolves around a “highly respected lab technician specializing in blood spatter for the Miami Dade Police Department. He’s also a sociopathic serial killer whose ‘Dark Passenger’ drives him to commit the occasional dismemberment. Adopted at the age of 4 after an unnamed tragedy left him orphaned, Dexter learned, with help from his pragmatic policeman father, to channel his ‘gift’, killing only those who deal in death themselves.
“But when a new serial killer starts working in Miami, staging elaborately grisly scenes that are, to Dexter, an obvious attempt at communication from one monster to another, [Dexter] finds himself at a loss. Should he help his policewoman sister earn a promotion to the Homicide desk by finding the fiend? Or should he locate this new killer himself, so he can express his admiration for the other’s ‘art’? Or is it possible that psycho Dexter himself, admittedly not the most balanced of fellows, is finally going completely insane and committing these messy crimes himself?”
The character first surfaced in a terrific series of novels by Jeff Lindsay, with titles like “Darkly Dreaming Dexter” and “Dearly Devoted Dexter.” Played with unexpected charisma by Six Feet Under’s Michael C. Hall, who is almost unrecognizable here, Dexter is damaged goods. Luckily for society, his sociopathic and murderous leanings were discovered at an early age by his foster father, a policeman, who urged Dexter to channel his dark urges for good.
STOP PRESS: I received an email from Showtime informing that you can view the entire first episode online. (If you are a US resident as for some bizarre reason, the Showtime website is not available to non US residents. So for US readers of this blog:

Based on the epic graphic novel by Frank Miller, 300 is a ferocious retelling of the ancient Battle of Thermopylae in which King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. The test screenings have been receiving some amazing feedback and it is easy to see why after seeing the trailer. (which also features the music of Nine Inch Nails).

It’s been a couple of weeks now since I upgraded to the Macbook Pro and the verdict… these machines are friggn awesome! The fact that I can now run both Windows and OSX on the same machine, is an absolute godsend. Not that I use Windows often, but I do have to use it when I am doing some of my monthly contract work which requires the use of a Microsoft Business Desk application - which only runs on a Windows box. It was a real hassle for me as I would have to boot up into an old PC I have here in a spare room, drag the ethernet lead from one room to another where my Airport hub is, transfer files from my Mac onto this PC etc etc. Now, I simply run Parallels to fire up XP on the Macbook and do the work from the one machine. No mess. No fuss. Easy as hell!
Initially I had set up a Windows partition on the Macbook and using Bootcamp, I would boot into Windows and do what I had to do. I prefer the Parallels way however, as it enables easy sharing over the two operating systems and I don’t have to shut-down and reboot. Granted, doing it via Parallels isn’t as fast as booting into Windows directly, but for the 30 minutes a day I have to use Windows, it is just perfect!
As always, the Mac has made my life just that little bit easier and I gots to tell ya - I’m seriously in love with my Macbook Pro!

I needed a day away from all the current projects that are currently in development and thankfully yesterday was a welcome relief from all projects that are needing the Visceral Industry touch. My girlfriend Rita had the day off yesterday and we decided to make a day of it as it is not too often that the planets align and we can both have a mutual day off. Both our schedules have been a little on the crazy side and we haven’t even had a chance to go to the movies which is something we would do almost on a weekly level. It didn’t matter to me that by taking yesterday off, my projects would be another day behind but fuck it, I needed to step away from them all and have a day to relax.
We spent the entire day in the city which was fun seeing as the weather was just fantastic yesterday. Here we are in the beginning of spring in the southern-hemisphere and it felt like a summer’s day. Whilst Rita was doing some shopping for her new motorbike, I had the camera in tow and snapped away at the urban niceties around the city of Melbourne. Actually, there is never a day when the camera isn’t by my side and we also checked out some of the camera stores as I am in the market to purchase the new Canon EOS-400D in the next month or so. (read: when-some-of-my-clients-can-actually-pay-me-for-the-work-I-am-doing-for-them!)
I showed Rita some of my fave (newly discovered) street-art havens and some of the best cafe’s of Melbourne that are scattered throughout the backstreets and alleyways - hidden from the general populace it seems.
Our day was capped off with a visit to our fave Chinese restaurant, the ‘Good Luck’ restaurant on Chapel St. Prahran. An enjoyable meal was had (even though our waitress didn’t understand a single word of English) and we then trekked off to Balaclava to get some freshly baked bagels that are to die for!
It was just great to be away from the desk today.
Star Trek heads back to TV with makeover. I’ve never really watched the original series of Star Trek having jumped on board big time during the Next Generation series, but this sounds interesting.
