A New Beginning

Yesterday was a strange day. Last week I had the opportunity to apply for a Multimedia position that was being advertised in a popular Australian design forum. The job pre-requisites involved skills in design and video/audio production and an affinity for the Macintosh platform. Reading the job description I knew that my skillset when it comes to the video/audio side of things is minimal at best. Sure I’ve dabbled here and there and I know the basics of such apps as Final Cut Pro and Soundtrack - but I am hardly a skilled performer in these disciplines. Although… I sure as hell want to be!

Thinking to myself I had absolutely nothing to lose if I applied… I sent forth my standard covering letter and resume detailing the past 10 years of my career in the Web Design/Multimedia industry.

Early last week, I received an email informing me I had been shortlisted for the position. I was pleasantly surprised and flattered but I wrote back and stated that although my Web Design/Graphic Design skills were of a high standard, I was not very confident in the video/audio side of things.

They were pleased with my honesty and still wanted to meet with me.

I went through two interviews over the course of a couple of days. One was a brief meeting with the boss and the other a couple of days later was an extensive two hour meeting with the guy I was to be replacing.

I felt both interviews went well. I felt comfortable and confident that I could learn the video side of things in no time.

The weekend came and went and I was expecting to hear back from them on Monday with an answer.

I heard nothing on Monday but come Tuesday, I received an email and a call that I wasn’t selected for the job.

Fair enough. I knew that my lack of video/audio production would ultimately land someone else the position.

I spoke to my girlfriend about it over the phone and she appeared to be more upset than I but I was doing all I could to keep a brave face and focus on getting something else. I really need a gig bad as the freelancing is just not providing me with enough income to stay afloat. I wish it would… but it just doesn’t and I am literally sick and tired of everyone wanting work done for next-to-nothing. Chasing monies you are owed as well, is not fun and incredibly stressful.

But I digress.

So after the initial disappointment of finding out you’ve just missed out on the gig, I emailed the company back, thanked them for the opportunity and their time and wished them the best of luck for the future.

I then got an email in reply to call them back.

I assumed that maybe they had some freelance work to throw my way - I sure as heck need it so I called.

To my surprise… I was told that… I had the job! They weren’t feeling confident with the first candidate who was offered the job so they wanted to see if I was still interested! Hell yeah I was interested!

After all the formalities and the pleasantries… I begin work for them next Tuesday and I am excited as hell to be able to compliment my design skills with the video/audio side of things. Cannot wait to learn all that goes with that and sink my teeth into a new discipline.
