The city of Melbourne boasts an incredible array of street-art clearly making it the graffiti capital of Australia. No contest. Trawling through the streets and alleyways of this city - one can stumble upon an incredible selection of style and color and some of the finest urban art on display.
What makes it all the more exciting and vibrant is the fact that it is an art-form that constantly evolves and changes before your eyes almost on a daily level. What features on a wall one week, more often than not will be completely different in a week’s time.
I have been in awe of Melbourne’s street-art scene for the past 3-4 years and I make a conscious effort to document and photograph the art on display several times a week.
The scene has been good to me… it is how I met my girlfriend who also shares my passion for photographing the many pieces on offer throughout the streets of Melbourne. I can think of nothing better when the pair of us load our camera gear and head off through the underbelly of this city to find new works throughout some of our fave haunts.
Over the past weekend, we attended the Stencil Festival, which was taking place a J-Studios in Barkly Street, Fitzroy. Many of the genre’s finest artists were displaying their works. Featuring pieces by names such as Satta, ‘Fray’, Ghostpatrol, - there was a diverse display of some damn fine art pieces on sale. With prices ranging from $100 to $6,000 - there is quite a buzz developing on this fledgling and thriving art-form that uses this beautiful city of ours as a living, breathing and evolving canvas.
