This Is England

This Is England

This Is England’ is one of the most amazing movie experiences you are likely to see all year. Set in Thatcher’s England with the country at war in the Falkland Islands, the dreary desolation and despair of midlands, England permeates throughout the film. Young and naive Shaun (magnificently played by newcomer Thomas Turgoose) - is 12 years old and mourning the death of his father killed in the Falkland war. He seeks friendship and an end to the bullying he receives at school. so he finds solace with the local skinheads. They quickly take him under their wing and introduce him to the world of Doc Martens, suspenders and obligatory crew-cut! At this point in time, the film cruises along with tinges of genuine humor and innocence, but the life of Shaun changes drastically when the volatile and incendiary Combo (Snatch star - Stephen Graham) is released from prison. The mood and frivolity takes a backseat to the underlying sinister tones of violence and mayhem that Combo has now brought to the lives of these ‘fun’ skinheads. Each and every scene with Combo is laced with an ominous undertone. He is so viciously aggressive and head-strong in his misguided views of racism and nationalism. You literally view the innocence of young Shaun stripped away from him piece by piece.

An incredibly confrontational and stark film that has to be seen by all and sundry. Movie of the year folks!

The Jenna Jameson Comic Book

The Jenna Jameson Comic Book

World-famous entrepreneur, adult entertainment icon and New York Times best-selling author Jenna Jameson is creating and staring in her own series of comic books, it was announced today by Virgin Comics CEO, Sharad Devarajan, at Comic-Con, the industry’s annual super-festival in San Diego. The series, titled Shadow Hunter, debuts in comic shops and online comic retailers in December. The complete 144 page Shadow Hunter book will be available in June 2008 at all major book sellers. A new site, www.JennaComix.com will host additional information, previews and pre-orders of the comic art and books.

Shadow Hunter is the story of a provocative superheroine who survives a brush with death only to find herself fighting the legions of hell for her very soul. Cover art for the first issue has been created by Greg Horn, a top illustrator of comic books and video games. The story, while provocative and sexy, contains no nudity and is intended for a mainstream audience.

“Jenna Jameson is a cultural force,” said Virgin Comics CEO Sharad Devarajan. “She is an entrepreneur who is taking the taboo to the mainstream and has built an industry around her brand.”

“I’m thrilled to be collaborating with Virgin to bring this story to life, first as comics and eventually in film and other formats,” said Jenna Jameson. “Working with comics is creatively liberating – everything is possible. My character is sultry, sexy and kicks ass!’

“Jenna brings a defiance and edge to everything she does, said Gotham Chopra, Chief Creative Officer of Virgin Comics. “She’s a provocateur and there’s no doubt that our creative team at Virgin is going to have a blast collaborating with her. I can assure you every artist we have in our studio is vying to get assigned to this project!”

The Guardian Angel

The Guardian Angel

I posted this photo on my flickr set earlier today after my lunch break at work and called it ‘Guardian Angel’. This is clearly a wonderful piece of street-art on Sackville Street, Fitzroy - but it wasn’t until later tonight that I realized just how prophetic this photo’s title really was.

As I was driving home from my girlfriend’s place tonight, there was a car driving on the wrong side of the road… heading head on - straight for me!

I couldn’t believe what I was seeing and this fleeting instant seemed to last forever. In the space of a split second I look in my rear-view mirror and saw that no one was to my left, so I swerved my car to get out of this lunatics way. In the process, I flashed my high beams at them to get their attention. They swerved out of the way and proceeded to head off at a ridiculous speed.

I felt an overwhelming shot of adrenaline pierce the base of my head and run down the length of my spine down my back. In a weird way, it felt orgasmic. Now, a couple of hours later, I can still feel this cold, eerie sensation permeating my spinal cord! So cold!

I was nearly killed - and lived to tell the tale.

Holy fuck!

I can’t believe what just happened. Tonight, I lost one of my nine lives, that is for sure…

Explore Melbourne’s unique city laneways by discovering the Laneway Commissions, an annual event in the City of Melbourne’s Public Art program. Temporary art works are installed in city laneways to transform the western side of the inner city and financial district and give viewers an altered perspective of the urban environment. Commencing in June, installations will be progressively introduced to intrigue passers-by.

Artist: Heather B. Swann
Location: Degraves Place
(off Degraves Street between Flinders Street and Flinders Lane, Melbourne, Australia)
Dates: 20 July 2007 – 9 March 2008

The multi-headed dog monster Cerberus protects the entrance of Hades, the classical underworld. Swann’s sculpture stands guard at the Degraves Place entrance to the Flinders Street pedestrian underpass.

Gates of Hell has its origin both in the stories of Greek and Roman mythology, of Hercules and Orpheus, and in the forms of French Romanesque sculpture, with its heraldic, symbolic and decorative beasts and its Last Judgement hell mouths.

More important than these cultural references, however, is the work’s primitive emotion, its expression of angry threat.

Cerberus’s biting, barking heads are designed to frighten us. The artist is challenging our complacency and lethargy.

She wants us to think about (and act against) the hellishness of now, the purgatories and punishments of the contemporary world.

Sculpture manufactured in collaboration with Ian Burns and John Clark of Millennium Art Services.
