Studio to Director: ‘Wild Things’ Needs Taming

Where The Wild Things Are

Maurice Sendak’s 1963 children’s book Where The Wild Things Are may be a beloved classic, but with just 338 words and an unruly kid who hangs with a group of gloomy, hard-partying monsters at its center, it doesn’t sound like old-fashioned family fun. No wonder, then, Warner Bros. is concerned that its $75 million film adaptation might not become the blockbuster it needs. The movie – which has been in development at various stages since 1992 – will miss its original release date this October 2008, and now director Spike Jonze, who is best known for offbeat, grown-up fare such as being John Malkovich, is about to begin a round of reshoots. In addition, sources inside the studio and around Hollywood tell EW the production is “deeply troubled.”

The problems began at the end of last year, when Jonze showed early versions to Warner execs. According to sources, they told him that his take was too dark for it target audience. Wild Things producer John Carls insists “there is nothing inappropriate for a child,” but bloggers fueled the bad buzz with reports that youngsters cried during a public research screening last December. All of that prompted Warner to request significant changes to the script (penned by Jonze and author Dave Eggers) from Alvin and The Chipmunks screenwriter Jon Vitti. Carls says that the script’s tone will not change; rather, he explains,” we’re inserting new moments that will make the individual Wild Things’ story lines more clear.” Warner, meanwhile, issued this statement: “We have always believed in and continue to support this film. As with all films, post-production is an evolving process, and Spike Jonze will be shooting some additional scenes.”

Since he doesn’t have authority over the final cut, fans are encouraging Jonze to leak his version online if the studio ends up removing him from the film. Carls says that won’t happen, and adds that Sendak himself is “very pleased with what Spike has accomplished thus far.” Considering that Warner is still smarting from the abysmal debut of its kid-targeted Speed Racer adaptation, perhaps its execs should hope that the master of children’s storytelling is right.

Why Do You Seek The Living Among The Dead? The Return of Tom Gabriel Fischer

Tom Gabriel Fischer

Former Celtic Frost frontman Tom Gabriel Fischer has announced the formation of his new band, TRIPTYKON. Check out the group’s logo at this location. The first audio sample, a track called Cucifixus, can be heard on Triptykon’s official MySpace page.

Commented Fischer: “Triptykon will sound as close to Celtic Frost as is humanly possible, and the album I am working on will feature all the material I envisioned for the successor to [Celtic Frost's] ‘Monotheist’. I desire the album to be a darker, heavier, and slightly more experimental development of ‘Monotheist’.

“‘Cucifixus’ is but one of many compositions to that end. TRIPTYKON is not defined by just this one song, however, just like Celtic Frost was not defined by ‘Totengott’ alone.”

Fischer announced his departure from Celtic Frost last month, citing “the irresolvable, severe erosion of the personal basis so urgently required to collaborate within a band so unique, volatile, and ambitious.”

“I have always seen the ‘Monotheist’ album as a mere beginning, and a tame one at that,” he explained. “My mind and spirit are full of energy, creativity, and ideas. Celtic Frost had become the unreserved focus of my life for the second time. I was looking forward immeasurably to working on the next Celtic Frost album. To me, it needed to be darker, heavier, and more experimental than ‘Monotheist’.

“And yet, Celtic Frost consisted of three individuals, and I was only one of them. In the end I had to concede to myself that there was no other option.”

Fischer added, “Artistically, I did not want to leave Celtic Frost at all; I have never been happier with the music and creativity in the band. I saw ‘Monotheist’ as only the first of hopefully several distinctive albums by this group. I thus plan on continuing exactly in the artistic vein of Celtic Frost. I had very a distinct vision of what the next two Celtic Frost albums might consist of, and I intend to eventually fulfill this vision and complete these albums with a new group. I would also like to continue touring and perform the music I have written in Celtic Frost over the years for audiences all across the globe.”

It was reported earlier in the year that Celtic Frost was putting together an album tentatively titled “Monotheist Companion” that will feature unreleased songs from 2006’s “Monotheist” sessions and rearrangements of tracks from the album. The disc is tentatively due in the summer.

Agent Provocateur’s Decadence, Debauchery & Witchcraft

Agent Provocateur's Decadence, Debauchery & Witchcraft

The latest Agent Provocateur campaign has arrived and typically it’s as provocative as ever. Past stars of their campaigns have included Kate Moss and former Blackbook cover girl Maggie Gyllenhaal. But the label’s latest just might take the cake for both vampiest and most likely to seduce. The series, entitled ‘Tableaux Vivants’, looks a bit like Caravaggio meets campy B-horror flick at a high-fashion orgy. And not only that. The campaign stars up-and-coming it-girls/rock scions Peaches Geldof and Daisy Lowe. If the lace, latex thigh-highs, and whips don’t get you drooling, you may be already dry.

Named after George A. Romero’s film Season of the Witch. The film, made in 1971, tells of the misadventures of a housewife who breaks the monotony of her life by entering the world of witchcraft. (as you do!) Agent Provocateur have focused on the erotic side of the film.

The media attention it’s attracting, along with the amazing photos, guarantees new success for Agent Provocateur, who remain true to their principles submerging us in an erotic vampire world.

Friggn sensational! Check it all out after the jump…

H.R. Giger Revealed

H.R. Giger Revealed

My first foray into the world of H.R. Giger happened in 1985. A good friend of mine who went under the affectionate monicker of ‘Mick The Wiz’, (due to his dabbling in all things that go bump in the night and his fondness for Aleister Crowley) – bought for my birthday Giger’s Necronomicon II book.

I remember turning the pages of that book and literally being blown to hell at the sheer majesty and darkness at the artwork before me. It was all so spellbinding and mezmerising. I had never seen anything like that and still to this day, Giger is unparalleled.

Having been a fan all these years, two years ago I approached Giger’s manager with an offer to re-do the official Giger website. I was shocked when I got a response from his manager Les Barany who had looked over some of my work and was to speak to Giger about us working together on a new site.

After some emails back and forth… it didn’t all pan out and the same (horrid) site remained, but I felt I had come close to working with one of my heroes. Heck, I would do the site for free if need be because just to be working for someone so artistically dark and amazing – would have been a dream come true.

But I digress. (I do that alot!)

There is a new documentary titled ‘H.R. Giger Revealed’.

Whether it’s Ridley Scott’s award-winning Alien (based on his work Necronom IV) or the artwork for Debbie Harry’s solo album, Celtic Frost’s albums or the obscenity-lawsuit attracting cover for the Dead Kennedy’s Frankenchrist, we have all at one time or another been exposed to the dark and wonderfully twisted world of Swiss painter, sculptor and set designer Hans Ruedi Giger.

Documentary director David Jahn started work as an assistant at Giger’s studio in Zürich in 2000. After his departure back to the Czech Republic he co-operated with Giger as an initiator and consultee of the Prague exhibition which took place 14th April – 13th September 2005 at the National Technical Museum.

Jahn proposed to Giger to produce a DVD that would map his work and current life. The shoot took place at Giger’s studio in Zürich and in Gruyéres, where the H.R. Giger museum and bar is located.

Footage includes an interview with Austrian artist Ernst Fuchs, Debbie Harry (Blondie) recounting how their collaboration came about, Ridley Scott’s candid description of the moment he saw Necronomicon and realised his search for the perfect ‘Alien’ had ended and numerous interviews with fellow artists at the openings of his Paris and Prague exhibitions.

Initially his monochromatic canvasses depicting surreal, nightmarish dreamscapes (often displaying fetishistic, sexual imagery which have garnered him a large following in the gothic, occult and dark-burlesque scenes) were predominantly created by airbrush whereas later work has been created using markers, ink and pastel colours. His most distinctive stylistic innovation is that of a representation of human bodies and machines in a cold, interconnected relationship described as biomechanical. Often the result of visions he has had through the sleep disorder known as night-terrors, it is no wonder that film makers from the darker end of the spectrum (Alien, Dune, Poltergeist II, Species) have so often sought to collaborate with him when looking to achieve their vision.

The authors do not avoid the particular developmental periods of Giger’s work, however, the main purpose was not to create the artist’s biography. What they have achieved is an authentic perspective on the peculiar world of this ground breaking Swiss artist.

Reznor Gives Fans The Slip

Nine Inch Nails ~ The Slip

There was a time where new music from Trent Reznor/Nine Inch Nails would only occur every 5 years. The wait was always agonizing and enough to try the patience of even the most ardent and devout fan. But with overwhelming anticipation, we waited. And waited. And waited. But that’s not to say that Reznor wasn’t busy. In between albums, there’s always been NIN goodness released in the form of videos, DVDs, soundtracks and the like.

But now that the man has been released from the shackles of the record company, he’s become one prolific mofo churning out and giving away music almost on a monthly basis!

A couple of weeks ago, the official Nine Inch Nails site featured a free download of the track ‘Discipline’. It was a decent enough track and featured in its ID tags a hint of more to come. May 5 was the date and the site also began hinting that something big was gonna land on this day.

And here we are. A new Nine Inch Nails album is there for the taking. No catches. No shitty quality files. Here it is. All yours. Download it. Enjoy it.

Wow!

So on first listen, I’ll wait a while before I review it proper, but it is great! At this point, I am still trying to get my head around it all as I still hadn’t fully digested the Ghosts album of several weeks ago.

Exciting times indeed to be a NIN fan.

Now, let’s see Radiohead try and top this one hey?

The music is available in a variety of formats including high-quality MP3, FLAC or M4A lossless at CD quality and even higher-than-CD quality 24/96 WAVE. All options are free. All downloads include a PDF with artwork and credits.
