Don’t Kill Live Music

Don't Kill Live Music

PROTEST RALLY THIS TUESDAY FEBRUARY 23RD

Despite ongoing talks with State Government, LIVE and/or AMPLIFIED MUSIC is still the trigger for high risk conditions on many liquor licenses. We march in protest. Our small venues and community must be protected, empowered and respected.

Assemble at the State Library, cnr Swanston and Latrobe Sts.

ARRIVE EARLY – MARCH LEAVES AT 4PM

This is a peaceful protest. Families welcome and encouraged to join the march.

STRICTLY NO ALCOHOL. It’s illegal to drink in the street and important to show the broader community that WE ARE NOT HIGH RISK.

Bring your own water, sunscreen and a hat.

March with your band, your pub, your community footy team, your music school, your fans, your friends and family.

Make your tribe visible – wear your favourite band’s t-shirts (especially your own band!)

Bring placards and banners, just keep them low as tram lines are active.

March with your instruments; learn the chords to ‘It’s A Long Way to the Top’! We will be rotating the riff all the way to Spring Street.

On the 23rd of February, coinciding with the 34th anniversary of AC/DC’s famous ‘It’s A Long Way To The Top’ film clip shoot down Swanston St, S.L.A.M (Save Live Australia’s Music) is organising a protest in support and celebration of the music scene in Victoria where current liquor licensing laws threaten to pull the plug on live music.

We will march at 4pm from the State Library and make our way along Swanston St and up Bourke St to Parliament House in Spring St where we will have guest speakers from 6-7pm.

We have organised the RocKwiz Orchestra with guest performers to lead the rally, repeating the three chords from ‘It’s A Long Way to the Top’ in the back of a flat bed truck as we follow.

Celebrate the diversity of Victorian music – this will be a day to remember!

A New Coat Of Paint

As we’re about to enter our 6th year of Dogmatic goodness, I felt it was time for a new coat of paint.

Inspired by a photo I had taken back in 2006 of an antiquated office I stumbled upon, purely by accident one night. See below. This place looked like it had been frozen in time, a relic from days gone past. It looked old. Dilapidated. And something akin from a David Lynch movie.

The Malevolant Order

The Malevolant Order

I’ve created a little sister site to Dogmatic over at Tumblr.

Titled The Malevolant Order, it will feature quirky visual stimuli of bits and pieces I have bumped into during my web trawling travels. Generally, stuff that just doesn’t fit here at Dogmatic… a visual ‘asides’ if you will.

Take it all with a fine grain of salt but do enjoy!

Head on over and check it all out…

New Visceral Industry

Visceral Industry

I’ve spent the last few days working on the new Visceral Industry site. Well, it’s pretty much as it was but now finally powered by Wordpress.

Do me a favor, head on over there and test it out for me. See if you can break it. It still needs some cosmetic work throughout, but I’ll get to that over time.

Cheers!

Welcome To Mick (The Wiz)

Strange how this Internet thing works sometimes. Many, many years ago – when the Earth was still young and the ‘net was non existent, I was friends with a dear, dear fellow who opened my eyes and my mind to many things wide and afar.

As time escaped from us all, we lost contact but I always remembered him for the true friend that he was and of the many good times we shared.

So through the monstrosity known as Facebook, we have re-established contact and Mick the Wiz (as we all knew him then) is back in my life and now, will be an integral part of Dogmatic.

It gives me great pleasure to introduce to you all – Mick the Wiz.

Over to you Mickey!

Welcome To Mick (The Wiz)

In the misty morning, on the edge of time, I once made mountains shake with laughter as I played.
A boundless god was I, strutting from world to world. No childish mischief ever left unmade.
With furrowed brow and clutching hands, I clawed at lore satanic never told.
And watched in horror mixed with glee the devilish consequences unfold.
No repentence mine nor self-respect as wilfully I stared into the abyss.
Casting dice with Satan, my soul’s tipping point a target hard to miss.
Yet, ‘ere false starts and false gods, an earthly angel barred my way.
Despite failing sight and Samson’s loss, shreds of sanity and dignity were saved.
Now, old and frayed, my mind restored, yet scarred from battles past.
I regale all with tales of old, and laugh and drink at follies passed.
My tales of minstrels iron-forged shall be from years of yore.
Cessation now; head out of arse, ‘ere I become a bore.

(BTW, I’m the bald one on the left – the other one’s Jeff from Carcass)

Welcome To Lucy Toes!

Welcome To Lucy Toes!

Armed with a useless fine art degree, Lucy Toes strode out into the world of creative pursuits with a sharpie in one hand and a baseball bat in the other. A fan of all things subversive and strange, Lucy has a passion for art and architecture with a twist of the bizarre.

Having recently returned from an 8 year sojourn in London playing with the all-girl punk band, the Toes, Lucy is rediscovering her erstwhile hometown, Melbourne. A daughter of an English father and a Turkish mother, she was moved to the strange land that is Australia aged 10 and has always had a dueling fascination and aversion to the streets and icons of the city.

A lover of light and dark in all things, Lucy looks forward to getting down and dirty with the slime, crime and grime of the city and sharing her experiences with you.

Fresh off the boat in a confused, breathless state, watch the town come alive through her skewed and slanted eye.

Welcome To Joel!

Joel Sabadin

You know, this is getting awfully exciting. There’s some good peeps on board the Dogmatic train already – and there’s even cooler peeps waiting in the wings. You’re gonna meet them all over the next few weeks but for now, it gives me great pleasure to introduce you to Joel!

Joel Sabadin likes to create.

Since a young age Joel has been drawn to the notion that one is able to record their imagination via various mediums for the world to see.

Painting dreams and ideas of things never been. Photographing the glance, the stare and the focus of any day. Illustrating thoughts.

Animating realities yet to come.

The grass that grows through the crack in the footpath is my hero.

A lover of music, filmaking, special effects, moths, photography, animation, painting, zombie survival knowledge, the experimental, science, robots, the beginning, the middle, and the end.

The Second Coming Of Dogmatic (Part II)

I am genuinely excited about what is currently happening here at Dogmatic. Whilst I have been totally preoccupied with designing the new look, the Dogmatic team is growing daily.

There are some wonderful people on board right now (Steph, Fiz and Jen) who I have already introduced to you – but there are a few more waiting in the wings and who I will slowly introduce over the next few days. Trust me, we’ve got some really good things lined up.

Design wise, I am still plugging away at the look and feel. You can view where we are currently at below:

I am still a little unsure on fonts and an overall flow of the design, but it will be evolving over the course of the next few weeks. At this stage, I am unsure of when we will be launching proper – but keep your eyes right here and watch it grow! ;)

Welcome To Steph!

The Dogmatic team is growing and soon, ve vill be taking over ze vorld! Having said that, it gives me great pleasure to introduce our new scribe to you. Steph Dyhin has answered the call and will be a vital cog in team-Dogmatic. So this is where I shut up and pass the mike over to our new inductee.

A student of cultural studies and social theory, my business card says ‘communications coordinator’, but my heart says writer, film buff and music nerd. I try not to be a film snob but I do prefer cinema that challenges the viewer, is elegantly beautiful or creatively written. That said I confess to being a little eccentric and can’t really explain my penchant for spy movies, magical realism and Bruce Willis. Yay Bruce!

I love writing and my blog posts range from thought provoking articulations to self-indulgent mood pieces. Basically I’m nuts about films, music, technology and culture and I want to share it with the interwebs.

The Second Coming Of Dogmatic (Part I)

I think I get bored easily. For some reason or another, I’ve decided to redesign this blog from the ground up. Sure, this black & white version served us well, but as I said, I get bored easy and felt the need to give the blog a new kick-start! Besides, I miss the color! And I miss the old logo… a lot!!!

As you are already aware, Dogmatic is in the process of gathering together a team of kick ass individuals that will be delivering cool content constantly! I’ve had this vision for the blog for a long, long time where it becomes a host to talented individuals who will be providing a variety of content all under the Dogmatic umbrella.

I will slowly be introducing you to the new team over the next few weeks and you will be able to view their credentials and profiles here.

But more on this at a later date. I’m getting a lit ahead of myself but I am genuinely excited about where this blog is heading. But I digress. For now, we’re just gonna talk about the whole new look that is currently developing.

I happened to stumble upon a photo I took inside Melbourne’s Nicholas Building a while ago. A tangled mess of telecommunication wiring from a bygone era. I always liked this photo and marveled at it’s spaghetti like tangling. (see below)

The building trapped in time, the Nicholas Building

The original spaghetti wired mess!

I decided to quickly play around with the photo and use it as the basis for what started to become a new look for Dogmatic. As with things of this nature, I really dig ‘behind-the-scenes’, ‘making-of’ types of stuff, so I figured it would be good to let you, the humble Dogmatic droog have a peek behind the curtain as the new look begins to take shape.

How does that sound? You’re gonna see this blog slowly transform and watch the new look develop before your eyes. The challenging part is getting all neatly tucked into a Wordpress backend – but, we’ll give it a try and see what happens.

Stick with us… big, big things on the horizon!

Welcome To Penny!

I’ve been trying to get Penny B. Dreadful to be part of the Dogmatic crew for a while now. Finally the planets have aligned and it is indeed an honor and privilege to have her as part of the team. Her insight and knowledge of all things that go bump in the night is indeed, second to none!

Scream Queen, Penny B. Dreadful is a director of both film & theatre, actor, a comic book character, screenwriter, podcaster, Fangoria.com contributer, socmed anti-celeb, rock chick & model. Penny lives, breathes and loves horror films and has a soft spot for Frankenstein’s monster and slow, lumbering zombies. Penny has recently been cast in the British indie zombie flick sensation ‘Invasion of the Not Quite Dead’ in a leading role, and is currently on board as consultant and producer on a handful of exciting film projects, including the upcoming ‘Straw Man’. You can see Penny kick some monster arse in comic-book character form, in Fangoria’s ‘Death Walks The Streets’ comics…

Penny B. will be providing some bite to Dogmatic. She’ll be kicking things off shortly with an insight on everyone’s fave vamps over at HBO’s ‘True Blood’.

Put away the stakes and crucifix and do welcome her aboard!

And if you have the passion and dedication to become a fellow Dogmatic droog, we are recruiting! Email me at dogmatic@gmail.com.

Welcome To Jen!

Boys and girls and all Dogmatic droogs, it is with great pleasure that I introduce our wonderful new scribe. Jen Braginsky will be handling all matters of cool television with aplomb and style that only she can bring to Dogmatic.

Jennifer’s daylight hours are mostly spent working in marketing & advertising while the evening hours are spent with her beloved TiVo.

Her tastes lean to more offbeat shows, science fiction/fantasy, and the good stuff the BBC puts out. Some of her all-time favorites are Supernatural, The Mighty Boosh, Doctor Who, Dark Angel & Ugly Betty.

With a Media Studies and Journalism degree, she figures if she’s going to watch the stuff, maybe she should write a bit about it, too. She does admit she gets a bit too giddy watching Fall pilots (even though very few tend to make her Season Pass-Worthy standards).

So please, welcome her aboard! And if you have the passion and dedication to become a fellow Dogmatic droog, we are recruiting! Email me at dogmatic@gmail.com

We’re Six Years Old Today!

We're Six Years Old Today

Dogmatic turns 6 today! It’s been a bumpy ride at times but we’re still here and dare I say it, still kicking ass! There have been numerous incarnations and visual stylings that have adorned this blog, I’ll post a retrospective one day but for now – it’s a big happy birthday to all things Dogmatic and here’s to another 6 years of more groovy content and a celebration of all things that go bump in the night!

Raise your glasses!

What’s The Buzz Tell Me What’s Happening

Well it has been a bit of a roller coaster ride lately. Thing is, I hate the fuckers. They usually scare the hell out of me and in all honesty, things were looking pretty grim for the ole Dogmatic.

The good news is, were back with a whole new look and… annnnnd, we have all our old content.

So, where is it?

It’s safe and sound and will soon, be re-populating this blog over the course of a few weeks. I’m gonna sift through it all and add all the fave stuff from the past 6 years.

Hang in there. We are back and we’re here to stay. Which is not to say there isn’t a ton of work to be done.

The theme, which I’ve called ‘1960′ needs a ton of work to it still. But you will see it flesh out over the course of time.

We’ll get there ok?

Risen From The Dead

The Inner Sanctum

It all happened so inconspicuously. Over the course of the past couple of months, I noticed a sudden and massive drop in the traffic to Dogmatic. It was an intense downturning spike and I shoulda known something was up then, but I just figured the readership must have tired of our content and moved on to greener pastures.

Last week, I received an email from Google informing me that they would no longer be indexing the site due to ’spam’ and other ’suspicious’ activity. Huh? Now it was all beginning to make some sense. The site had been somehow compromised.

A friend looked into it for me and he immediately found a ‘XSS attack/code injection’ into the code which was generating the spam and sending Google into a tailspin. He successfully removed the trojan but wasn’t sure how far back the exploit went.

Even if we restored the database, there could still be remnants of this thing.

What to do?

I considered shutting shop. The blog had been in existence since 2003 and maybe it was time to move on from it all. But the bottom line is, I enjoy this blog and I love updating it. Why stop it all?

Rather than scrap it all together, I felt it might be time for a reboot. With all possible trojans removed – it was time to start afresh.

So here we are. A little naked of content, but a chance to start with a clean slate.

Ladies and gentlemen, Dogmatic has risen from the ashes.

A new journey begins!
