Black Magazine Issue Two Out Now!

As has been covered on this blog before, there is an exciting new Australian publication called Black and yours truly will have a regular column in each issue. I’m not a liberty to discuss exactly what I will be contributing to the mag as editor Angela Chalis and I are still fine tuning some details, but for issue 2, I was fortunate enough to have some of my photography included in the column ‘Through A Lens Darkly’. (see above)

The shot was taken early last year at Centre Place, Melbourne - and is one of my faves as it features my girlfriend. I remember that weekend as if it were yesterday. She has a poster print of this on her lounge room wall and it looks really cool in a large scale format.

Issue 2 of Black should be hitting the newsagencies any day now and of course, you can find out more about it here.

Firebird Live @ Route 66

Firebird

Noticed the Route 66 flyer in my inbox this week promoting the fact the Firebird would be doing a freebie at Route 66 HQ today. I hadn’t ever seen Firebird live or was I familiar with their tunes - but on gut instinct, I thought I’d check them out.

Glad I did! They were phenomenally fun. Really enjoyed their energy, vibrance and all round fun Rockabilly music.

A great, great band all round!

Good Tidings

Flinders Street Melbourne

Had myself a pretty decent old day today. First of all, a recent photo of mine of Flinders Street Station has been chosen to appear on the front cover of a Melbourne industry magazine called ‘Planning News’. I was pretty stoked to have my work recognized like this… especially ‘cos it’s going to be on their cover! After a few emails and phone calls back and forth - we got it all organized. The magazine will be available on August 10. I’ll post more then.

In other matters, I have joined the team over at Black magazine. A couple of weeks ago I reported about this new dark culture magazine and now… I’m gonna be contributing very bits and pieces as well as some of my more dark photography. Their latest issues is on sale throughout Australia in newsagencies everywhere, so do pick up a copy.

I’m really excited about this. The first issue looks friggn amazing and I am anticipating some really cool happenings with the guys from Black over the course of this relationship!

Editor Angela Challis and I, discussed what my role would be today over the phone and I am so looking forward to getting stuck into it all.

Pic of the Bunch: Starving For Your Art

I had the opportunity to be in the city on my lunch break. Dunno why it’s deemed a ‘lunch’ break because with a rare opportunity like this, I’d rather be taking photos than eating. As hungry as I was, I spent my break quickly trawling through some of my fave streets and alleys and taking as many shots as I could before I had to head back into work.

I don’t think I can ever get tired of doing that. I consider it practice as I try to learn more and more about this craft. It brings me so much joy. I feel complete when I have the camera in my hand. I feel in harmony with the urban environment which always… always looks different from the viewfinder. It all looks constricted and as I focus in and out, I see people scurrying out of the way. Sometimes they smile. Sometimes they scowl. Sometimes they are completely oblivious that I am watching them and shyly, I try and pretend I am focussing on something else as I don’t want them to feel uncomfortable.

The Everfresh Crew Hit Hosier Lane

Meggs & Everfresh

No wonder Melbourne is the street-art capital of the world when there is such amazing work on offer. Some of Meggs’ latest offerings have blown me away and the stuff along Hosier Lane is a real treat to see. Do check it out for yourself, it looks a helluva lot more impressive when you’re standing right in front of this kick ass art.
