Slayer & Megadeth

It felt strange attending a gig where I wasn’t strapped with a camera bag on my back and a heavy camera around my neck! But tonight, I was here merely as a spectator and a fan – even though it would have been a blast photographing a couple of bands I have been listening to since their inception(!)

A few years ago, I caught Megadeth on their Australian Gigantour shows at this very venue, Festival Hall. It was a blistering set from the band and an absolutely classic gig. Check out our archives for a full review.

Tonight, the band was plagued by sound problems and after the third song, stormed off the stage to Mustaine’s disgust. They returned about 10 minutes later when the source of the sound problems had been sorted.

To be honest, they weren’t anything special tonight. No where near as powerful and magnificent as the last time I saw them and in the end, it was all pretty standard fare from Megadeth.

And then there was Slayer.

I knew we were about to have our brains melted when I saw the stacks of Marshall amps, three stacks high and about 8-10 long. Insanity!

And I was right. This was the most painfully loud gig I have ever experienced. In fact, it was just way too loud. Yeah, yeah, “too loud, too old” – fuck you, I’ve seen Motorhead – who probably left me with permanent ear damage back in the early 80’s. Well this was louder. Much louder.

Unfortunately, Tom Araya had pretty much lost his voice so we were left with just instrumental versions of Slayer classics and the occasional fan from the audience providing lead vocals. Kudos to the band for soldiering on, as it was MAGNIFICENT seeing the sublime Dave Lombardo show why he is one of the finest drummers out there today – but in the end, I felt a little disappointed that we got this limited show.

All in all, what could have been a classic performance end up being just average.

Marilyn Manson Hits Melbourne

Marilyn Manson Hits Melbourne

Back in 1996, I was as big a Marilyn Manson fan as you could get. The band, having signed to Trent Reznor’s label ‘Nothing Records’ – had released a couple of classic albums, ‘Portrait of An American Family’ and the magnificent ‘Antichrist Superstar’. A couple of records I played to death. Matter of fact, I still listen to them today.

I first saw Manson in concert in early 1997. The band were still practically unknown and touring Australia promoting the aforementioned ‘Antichrist Superstar’ opus. Witnessing the band playing at St.Kilda’s then Palace venue – was an amazing experience and a gig that truly, changed my life. They were so dastardly evil and dangerous back in the day – I felt as if I had watched Lucifer himself appear on that stage with arms stretched out in a sickly Jesus Christ pose, Manson stepped out from a cloud of smoke and tore the Palace a new one. It was a classic gig!

And here we are…

To be perfectly honest, I don’t even know how I landed the photopass for Marilyn Manson’s first Melbourne show at Festival Hall. I remember approaching the promoter for a pass to Dream Theater’s forthcoming tour and then many weeks later, there was an email in my inbox informing me of ‘Marilyn Manson photo accreditation’.

Nice! I wasn’t gonna complain.

This would be the biggest gig I have shot and my first time at Festival Hall. But, there was a catch.

One song, and then to be escorted out of the venue.

I had heard of such strict photo policies before and even tho I did feel a tad upset at having such limited access, I quickly debated in my head whether I should bother or not but when all was said and done… one song is better than no songs right?

And it was at this point… right then and there that I knew, I knew I would never bitch about the standard three-song limit ever again(!)

I arrived at Festival Hall to meet with my contact at the allotted time of 8.45pm. There were several photogs present, some I have shot alongside before but I remained quiet and truth be told, I was a little nervous about the night.

Just before showtime, we were escorted from backstage to the front of the stage and then to stage-right. The band had a huge black curtain present and that would have to drop and be gathered by the roadies before we were allowed center-stage in the photo-pit.

I felt my heart pounding in my chest as the lights lowered and the bottom-end tone of the intro music kicked into gear.

The curtain fell. The lights were blinding and I watched as the other 8 photogs scrambled ahead. It was so surreal. It was as if we were running into battle about to go over a trench and face enemy fire.

Man, the buzz was amazing.

Somehow I found myself directly in-front of Marilyn Manson himself. He was a mere inches away from my camera and I and knowing full well that the song had barely minutes to go, I clicked away frantically all the while conscious of getting it all in focus and getting it all composed as best as I could.

In a blink of an eye the song was coming to a close and I looked up as Manson was leering down at me. I then felt the cold wetness of a beer being spilt over the left side of my head and looking up and seeing an evil grin stare back at me. All I could do was high-five the man before being dragged away by the bouncers and escorted out of the venue.

Our song was up. The night was over.

I hoped hard, that I got some good shots…

Monster Magnet Live @ Billboard, Melbourne, Australia

Monster Magnet Live @ Billboard, Melbourne, Australia

In a night that photographically proved to be so bitterly disappointing, let’s start with some positives ok?

Firstly, Monster Magnet are an amazing live band.

When you can hear the Marshall stacks purring that monotonic electronic hum and drone before the band has hit the stage… you know you’re ears are about to get pummelled!

Goddamn they were loud!

Loudest gig I’ve ever seen at Billboard. No contest!

Having said that, the venue was packed. Literally packed to the rafters. You couldn’t move an inch either way.

The band was on fire. Tight. Loud. Raucous.

My heart was pounding in the pit like you would not believe and the energy from the room was so rockingly infectious.

This was going to be a good night for some old fashioned hard and heavy rock and roll!

So why the fuck did one of the bouncers kick us photogs out of the pit after one measly song?

What an incredible dampener to what would have been a kick-ass evening of hard rocking tunes from one of the genre’s finest.

It is so hard to get a decent shot with the usual three-song limit, but what in fuck’s name am I going to get with one song?

Bugger all!

It is a hard, thankless caper this rock and roll photography. Hard work for absolute zero reward.

So why do we do it?

It isn’t for the money. I haven’t made a single, solitary cent doing this. Not a one. But I try to be at as many events as I can because I love what I do and I want to learn as much as I can about my own capabilities as well as my camera’s.

I adore this work. I would like to turn it into a career (somehow, some way) but a night like tonight left me feeling so disenchanted and remorseful.

It’s late. The night is well into the AM and here I sit editing pics and getting ready to send them through to the promoter and to publish in my portfolio.

I have to be up in a few hours for my day job.

And the quest to make a name for myself doing what I love – will continue to spurn me on – even if it all feels so far, far away.

Sorry for such shitty photos this time guys.

Over and out.

Queensrÿche Live @ Billboard, Melbourne, Australia

Queensrÿche Live @ Billboard, Melbourne, Australia

Having grown up listening to the music of Queensrÿche throughout the early 80’s all the way through to the 90’s – they always ranked as one of my fave bands. Easily. With classic albums such as ‘The Warning’, ‘Rage For Order’, ‘Operation Mindcrime’ and ‘Empire’ – they were second to none.

To be perfectly honest, I haven’t really kept up with the band of late – it just has not been the same since Chris Degarmo left the band – and I was even considering not shooting tonight’s gig as simply put, I had lost interest in them.

But throughout the past week whilst I was debating on whether to shoot them or not – I went back through the band’s discography (see above) and was reminded, once again, just why I loved this band.

Gosh, they released some classic music over the years and whilst I was reminiscing through this amazing back-catalogue – I got the itch to not miss tonight’s show under any circumstance.

Listening to the band so thoroughly once again, helped me prepare for tonight’s shoot.

I watched some old concert videos and studied how each member performs, where they stand and what musical cues they react to in preparation and anticipation for the show. I mean, it had been so long since I considered myself a diehard fan, I didn’t even know who was in the band anymore.

On the day of the show, I had all my gear ready. Batteries, lenses and a strategy. I was ready. I was prepared. I was finely tuned to try some new camera settings and wanted to implement them all in the live environment.

But as prepared as I was, the night never nearly was. Arriving at the venue 30 minutes before Queensrÿche were to hit the stage, I presented my entry pass to the door girls and then I asked for my photo-pass.

"What photo pass? We don’t have you listed"

Great!

I frantically tried to call my contact at Billboard who provides me with photo-passes, but seeing as the venue is underground several levels, I had no reception on my phone.

I finally got a signal and sent a text to the venue manager and as he was texting me back I bumped into him and the photo-pass near disaster was avoided.

Lucky too. The venue was filled to the rafters and there was no way one could get any shots unless they were in the pit.

The band themselves were simply breathtaking. Playing practically 3 of their albums in their entirety, I was pleased as punch as they kicked things off with the Cyberpunk/neuromancer ‘Rage For Order’ repertoire as that was always one of my fave albums of theirs and one I had on heavy rotation throughout the past week after having let a decade and a bit pass since I had last heard it(!)

It was strange seeing them up on that stage. They looked fucking cool but ever since 1982 when I first started listening to them, I had never seen them live in the flesh. They, like me, are a little older now but geez they sounded amazingly tight, concise and meticulous. They rekindled some wonderful memories and reminded me pure and simple, why they were the best.

The Live Downward Spiral

The Live Downward Spiral

Nine Inch Nails fans got more than they bargained for last night (Aug. 23) at New York’s tiny Webster Hall, as they witnessed the Trent Reznor-led band play its 1994 classic The Downward Spiral in its entirety for the first time ever.

NIN is on a ‘Wave Goodbye’ tour of small venues, and had squeezed in to New York’s 550-capacity Bowery Ballroom the night before. At Webster Hall, the 1,000-strong crowd was drenched in sweat within minutes of the band taking the stage to the punishing rock of ‘Mr. Self Destruct’.

It was soon clear that Reznor and company were plowing through ‘Downward’ in sequence. He later told the audience, “I’ve always wanted to play that whole record, and this seemed like the time to do it.”

The ‘Downward’ sequence of course featured Nine Inch Nails’ iconic single “Closer,” which wasn’t played the night before, and finished with the hushed ‘Hurt’, which became known to an entirely different audience thanks to Johnny Cash’s memorable 2002 cover version.

Once ‘Downward’ was completed, NIN proceeded to play 10 more songs without an encore, including ‘Suck’ ‘The Hand That Feeds’ and its breakthrough 1989 hit, ‘Head Like a Hole’.

The NIN farewell tour continues tomorrow and Wednesday at New York’ Terminal 5, and wraps Sept. 6 at Los Angeles’ Echoplex. The band had originally planned to bow out of live performances after a summer tour with Jane’s Addiction, but Reznor said that since “we had to rush through sets due to a limited allotted set length and many shows were in daylight, it just didn’t feel right to end NIN that way.”

Five Finger Death Punch Live @ The Hifi Bar, Melbourne Australia

Five Finger Death Punch Live @ The Hifi Bar, Melbourne Australia

As has been previously discussed right here, the quest for a photopass can be a monumental procedure at best of times. If you are not working for a major publication, be it print or online – most of the major concert promoters completely and utterly ignore your request.

Of course, there are exceptions to that rule – and you can view my gratitude and thanks to those people in the credits section of this website.

Even if at this point in time I am strictly a freelancer when it comes to Rock N Roll photography – that does not mean that my work will not be helping the act in question on some capacity. The show will always be heavily promoted either here or on my blog Dogmatic which receives some serious traffic on a daily basis. Traffic which targets the key audience these promoters are trying to reach. Hello?

Having said that, I decided several months ago to prepare and present a professional looking website. The website would promote my work and be used as a marketing tool for me to be taken seriously and to show the promoter that I am not dicking them around.

This hasn’t always worked so in the perennial quest for the holiest of the hol’ – I go directly to the band. Fuck the middleman. Fuck all the bullshit and hoops you have to jump through to help promote the gig and the band. If you come across a promoter that just won’t budge – go directly to the source.

And that’s exactly what I did when I found out several months ago that Los Angeles Metal act, Five Finger Death Punch were about to tour these shores. I contacted the band directly through their management – presented my case and showed them my work via my website. Within an hour I had received confirmation that my pass had been granted.

No hoops. No trials and tribulations. No bullshit.

The shoot itself? Well, I hate shooting at the HiFi Bar. The lighting sucked (again) and was constantly red for the duration of the band’s set. *sigh*.

There were quite a few photogs present last night. At least 7 of us in the pit for the first 3 songs which was graciously extended to 4 songs as for the majority of song 3, the bouncers had their hands full with a couple of thugs who decided to fight in the crowd.

And as always, found it very hard to shoot anything decent with the first song. The band was highly energetic and frenetically moving around the stage. I don’t think I got a shot worth keeping at this point in time. By the time your alloted timeframe is about to end – is the point where you are taking some cool shots and have had time to acclimatize to the band, the lights and your camera.

View more pics after the jump, or head on over to the Visceral Industry for all the action.

Slayer & Megadeth Touring Australia

Slayer & Megadeth Touring Australia

Talk about a mind-blowing double-header. Slayer and Megadeth – two of the bands that defined the thrash/metal genre – will perform together for the first time ever in Australia and New Zealand when they co-headline six shows in October

Both Slayer and Megadeth have recently emerged from the recording studio with brand new albums – Slayer’s World Painted Blood, due out later this year, and Megadeth’s Endgame set for a September 11th release.

Slayer and Megadeth will be well-warmed up for the Australian/New Zealand dates, as the bands co-headlined the “Canadian Carnage” trek in June, marking the first time the bands had shared a stage in more than 15 years. According to various Canadian press outlets: “It was a night of thrash impossible to trash…” “Tales about war, death, destruction, Satan, aliens and serial killers have never been so much fun…” “The two heavy metal heavyweights …went head-to-head on a level playing field. Both bands brought their A game. And the results were anything but pretty – unless you include pretty freakin’ loud and pretty freakin’ awesome.”

Few bands come close to matching the intensity that Slayer brings to its live shows, having been named “Best Live Band” by numerous media outlets including Revolver, SPIN, and Metal Hammer. Slayer – guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman, vocalist/bassist Tom Araya and drummer Dave Lombardo – recorded World Painted Black in Los Angeles between October 2008 and April 2009 with Greg Fidelman producing and Rick Rubin executive producing. Fans around the world were given an early taste of the brutal new Slayer material when “Psychopathy Red,” a song inspired by the heinous Russian serial killer Andrei Chikatilo, who confessed to savagely murdering 56 children, was leaked online last Fall. Fans in Australia and New Zealand will be treated to Slayer performing “Psychopathy Red” live on stage.

With over 20 million albums sold worldwide, the icon that is Megadeth culminated the past April with Dave Mustaine’s acceptance of the highly coveted “Golden God” accolade and the band’s headline performance at the inaugural Revolver Golden Gods Awards in Los Angeles. Megadeth – lead guitarist/lead vocalist Dave Mustaine, lead and rhythm guitarist Chris Broderick, bassist James Lomenzo and drummer Shawn Drover – recorded Endgame, their 12th studio album in Los Angeles with Andy Sneap. Known for their ferocious live show, Megadeth will once again bring this intensity to their loyal throng of Australian and New Zealand followers.

Jane’s Addiction Cancel Australian Tour

Jane's Addiction To Tour Australia

Jane’s Addiction’s management has confirmed that percussionist Stephen Perkins has been admitted to the Infectious Disease Ward at Cedar’s-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles for treatment of an infection in his elbow. Doctors expect to keep him there for the next few days for further diagnosis and observation while anti-biotic treatment continues.

The reformed original line-up of Jane’s Addiction had been on their first world tour in over 17 years and had just returned to Los Angeles from a successful European leg when the mysterious infection was discovered after Perkins noticed severe swelling and pain building in his elbow.

Regretfully the group’s Australian tour, due to start on Saturday, is forced to be cancelled at this time.

Deathstars To Tour Australia

Deathstars To Tour Australia

September 24: Sydney – Manning Bar
September 25: Brisbane – Club 299
September 26: Melbourne – The Corner Hotel
September 27: Perth – Capitol

Tickets go on sale on Thursday, July 23 at 9:00 a.m. The first 1,500 tickets purchased come with three free Deathstars downloads.

“Combining elements from Rammstein, Cradle of Filth, Marilyn Manson and Clawfinger” – All Metal Source.com

“It’s like group sex between Samantha Fox, the Village People and Satan” – Whiplasher (vocalist)

“The sexiest Swedish export since Greta Garbo” – Planet Loud.Com (live review)

It is a ravishing rock group of many faces, with members who are as weird as they are charismatic; Sweden’s Deathstars and their unconventional live shows are coming to Australia.Winners of the Best Newcomers at the Golden Gods Awards in 2007 as presented by the UK Metal Hammer Magazine, this band and its five members are the founders of death glam-metal, a title not just any band can carry.

This deathly beautiful band have had their sound described as atmospheric and melodic containing elements of Rammstein, a sense of composition worthy of some of the best of Cradle of Filth, with a clear and present vibe of sex, guts and horror. Live reviewers have done nothing but rave about Deathstars who are renowned for pouting, flirting, sweating and stripping their way through a disgustingly excellent sleaze filled set. Front man Whiplasher is well known for his on stage debauchery and direct contact with audience members, often apologizing to the boyfriends in the crowd for arousing their screaming girlfriends so much.

Sweden’d death-glammers, Deathstars, and their infamous, wild, provocative and dark live sets will be in Australia for the first time in September.

The 69 Eyes Live @ The HiFi Bar, Melbourne Australia

The 69 Eyes Live @ The HiFi Bar, Melbourne Australia

I was in a weird headspace all week and it was a last minute decision to attend tonight’s gig. Still, I didn’t want to pass up on the opportunity of photographing an energetic and dynamically visual international rock act – so I tried to psyche myself, get to the gig and get the job done.

Photographing at the HiFi Bar can be one of two things… easy or difficult. I prefer shooting outside of the (sometimes) designated photo-pit. The pit is incredibly deep and more often than not – all you get is shots looking up the performer’s nose and all sorts of weird angles.

Tonight, the pit wasn’t in use and if you get to the show early enough, there is a really sweet spot on either side of the stage which allows for a fantastic vantage point and good angles to work with.

As stated from the outset, I wasn’t in the right frame of mind tonight and I found myself struggling to “get in the zone” as I like to call it.

“Getting in the zone” is when you and the camera are one. It is a time when you know you have captured the money shot just as you are about to press down on the shutter release. It happens rarely, but when it does… it is an amazing feeling and you know you’ve got gold even before chimping it up through the viewfinder.

Alas, tonight… I wasn’t in tune. Usually out of a shoot of over 400 shots, I usually find 60 – 70 that I feel are worthy of uploading. I could probably cull it down further, but on average that is the quota I usually release to the general populace.

Tonight, even though I shot for the duration of the band’s set – I could only come up with a handful to publish.

Still, it was a fun night and even though I was dodging the push and shove, I did come away with some shots that I thought were pretty good.

There was a great crowd in attendance. Most looking like the band themselves… a gothic-post-apocalyptic blackfest that looked like extras from Tarantino’s ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’. Coulda had some fun just shooting the crowd tonight but I planted myself at what I dub the ‘HiFi Bar Sweet Spot’ and waited for the band to hit the stage.

The 69 Eyes attacked the stage like the preverbal bats-outta-hell. Looking lean, mean and certainly out for the kill as they blasted through a surprisingly catchy hard rocking set of the best Vampiric rock the cold climes of Helsinki could spew forth!

Marilyn Manson To Tour Australia

Marilyn Manson To Tour Australia

I first got to witness Manson back in February of 1997. Pretty much an unknown in Australia but that is still a gig which I have many fond memories of. They’ve toured these shores several times since then and for all the newbie Mansonites, here’s your chance to see them live – albeit a shadow of the greatness they once exuded back in the ‘Antichrist Superstar’ era!

To co-incide with the release of his seventh album ‘The High End of Low’, Manson will return to Australia this October for a run of dates that take in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

The tour will see the return of legendary bassist Twiggy Ramirez. Chris Vrenna, Andy Gerold and Ginger Fish will complete the line-up.

Tickets go on sale Friday June 19. Presale starts midday Wednesday June 17, and finishes 5pm Thursday June 18.
