Banksy Loves New York

Banksy Loves New York

Gothamist is claiming that this new humorous mural on the corner of Grand and Wooster in downtown Manhattan is courtesy of infamous street artist Banksy and executed by the painters at Colossal Media, the same company responsible for all those hand painted billboards in Soho for H&M, among others.

Grindhouse @ The Astor

Grindhouse @ The Astor

I finally caught the Grindhouse double-feature at the Astor last night and you know what, I was sure as hell glad that I did! Seeing this classic double-feature at a theatre such as the Astor, was pure magic!

Both the Tarantino and Rodriguez films copped some flak on their initial release. Even tho I enjoyed both films (Rodriguez’s more-so than Tarantino’s) on their DVD release, seeing them on the big screen with a full-house, energetic and responsive Astor audience was pure magic! It was an enthralling night’s entertainment and hearing the crowd react and squirm and laugh and boo and cheer and practically roll with the punches and mayhem on screen - just made it all the more fun!

The Astor itself is such a classic theatre that it seemed tailor made to host this Grindhouse double-bill. I guess that is why the Grindhouse nights are so damn popular as the theatre has been featuring them several times a month for the past year or so.

Seriously, I know you’ve all seen the films. I know you’ve all got the DVD’s. But please, go to the Astor and don’t see these films… EXPERIENCE them! Allright?

Pure fuckn magic!

Agent Provocateur’s Decadence, Debauchery & Witchcraft

Agent Provocateur's Decadence, Debauchery & Witchcraft

The latest Agent Provocateur campaign has arrived and typically it’s as provocative as ever. Past stars of their campaigns have included Kate Moss and former Blackbook cover girl Maggie Gyllenhaal. But the label’s latest just might take the cake for both vampiest and most likely to seduce. The series, entitled ‘Tableaux Vivants’, looks a bit like Caravaggio meets campy B-horror flick at a high-fashion orgy. And not only that. The campaign stars up-and-coming it-girls/rock scions Peaches Geldof and Daisy Lowe. If the lace, latex thigh-highs, and whips don’t get you drooling, you may be already dry.

Named after George A. Romero’s film Season of the Witch. The film, made in 1971, tells of the misadventures of a housewife who breaks the monotony of her life by entering the world of witchcraft. (as you do!) Agent Provocateur have focused on the erotic side of the film.

The media attention it’s attracting, along with the amazing photos, guarantees new success for Agent Provocateur, who remain true to their principles submerging us in an erotic vampire world.

Friggn sensational! Check it all out after the jump…

Inglorious Bastards Poster?

Inglorious Bastards Poster

The Internet community has been buzzing ever since Brad Pitt signed on to headline Quentin Tarantino’s next feature film, Inglorious Bastards. With each casting announcement since it was just a matter of time before we get a glimpse at some teaser poster art. Now the question is, is it legit?

To go with the poster art, it has been confirmed that Robert Richardson, who worked as the Director of Photography on the Kill Bill features, as well as Casino and The Aviator, will be the DP for Inglorious Bastards.

Help Request

Hey Droogs,
You may have noticed the site was down for most of today. I was getting the error:

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Currently we are running Wordpress 2.6.2 (the latest version) and the latest build of the K2 theme.

Switching off wp-cache, solves the problem as obviously, you are reading this now.

Just wondering if anyone has had a similar problem and/or can offer a solution. I’d like to have the wp-cache plugin working as it speeds things up considerably.

Email me at: dogmatic@gmail.com or leave a comment here.

Cheers!

Black Magazine Issue Two Out Now!

As has been covered on this blog before, there is an exciting new Australian publication called Black and yours truly will have a regular column in each issue. I’m not a liberty to discuss exactly what I will be contributing to the mag as editor Angela Chalis and I are still fine tuning some details, but for issue 2, I was fortunate enough to have some of my photography included in the column ‘Through A Lens Darkly’. (see above)

The shot was taken early last year at Centre Place, Melbourne - and is one of my faves as it features my girlfriend. I remember that weekend as if it were yesterday. She has a poster print of this on her lounge room wall and it looks really cool in a large scale format.

Issue 2 of Black should be hitting the newsagencies any day now and of course, you can find out more about it here.

All I Want For Christmas Is This…

Easily the most anticipated camera in the galaxy, Canon’s 5D Mark II is official, and officially excellent. The full-frame, 21-megapixel DSLR is the first to shoot full HD video, and with Digic 4, Canon is promising low-light performance on par with that of Nikon’s D3 and D700 thanks to improved light gathering and noise reduction, with ISO range 100-6400, extendable up to 12,800 and 25,600. Add to that its high speeds and first-in-class video capabilities, and you can tell this camera was worth the agonising wait.

About video: It’s 1920×1080 resolution at 30fps—so 1080p/30 by most definitions—for up to 12 minutes of continuous recording, and it’ll go 24 minutes shooting SD. Yep, you’ve got a mini HDMI out port to plug it directly into your HDTV. Output is MPEG-4 with CD-grade audio (16-bit PCM at 44KHz), and unlike the D90, Canon records sound in stereo. Since the SLR mirror flips up to record video (really, the live view feed), you aren’t able to lock the focus, but live view has three different focus modes: face detection, quick and colour contrast.

Hard and fast camera specs and features
• 14-bit conversion
• 3.9FPS unlimited burst rate with JPEG using UDMA CF card, or 14 RAW (standard CF card is 78 JPEG, 13 RAW
• Four-channel readout that’s 2.2x faster than the 5D
• Lens peripheral illumination correction, like 50D, but better supposedly
• 15-point auto-focus
• Creative auto mode, also like 50D
• Auto-lighting optimiser
• Three levels of noise reduction that kicks in above 800
• RAW, sRAW1 (10MP), sRAW2 (5MP)
• Three-inch, 920,00 dot-screen
• New and improved battery (incompatible with old one) that delivers 850 shots or 1.5 hours of video
• 150,000 cycle shutter
• Magnesium alloy body
• NO built-in flash BTW

Yeah, this is what you’ve been aching for, especially if it delivers the performance it promises. It’ll be $US2700 for the body or $US3500 with the 24-105mm kit lens, out in November.

Agalloch - The White EP

Agalloch - The White EP

OK, I’ve had this EP on my playlist for about 3 months solid. Yes it’s that good well that’s if you like dark ambient neo folk!!!!!

Do you remember the 70’s British cult film The Wickerman? I do because of Britt Ekland - sweet Jesus she was hot and nude.

Well you may ask ‘what has that got to do with anything Bobby?’ Get to the point!!!!!

The seven tracks loosely revolve around the movie. I say loosely because the themes taken from the film are the backdrop to the main plot, samples etc.

“My father brought me up … to reverence the music and the drama and the rituals of the old gods. To love nature - and to fear it. And to rely on it and to appease it when necessary.”

I love this stuff, but I am a HUGE Skyclad fan.

These are beautiful and dark folk/ambient brooding tracks. Look I could gush about the EP for ages with it’s bittersweet bliss of cold, wandering solitude… but just let me say this is flawless stuff right here. BRILLIANT!

Plus check out their albums: ‘The Mantle’, ‘Ashes Against the Grain’ and ‘Pale Folklore’

“And what of the true god, whose glory, churches and monasteries have been built on these islands for generations past? Now sir, what of him?”

“He’s dead. Can’t complain, had his chance and in modern parlance, blew it.”

Judas Priest - Melbourne, Australia: Hisense Arena

Growing up with Metal fully flowing through the veins, there were always three bands who I considered to be the Holy Trinity when it came to all things Heavy. They were Dio-era Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest! These were the bands that throughout the early 80’s I would’ve given anything to see live. The closest we ever got was seeing Maiden in 82 & 85 and Dio with his solo band in 86.

The Priest were not seen on these shores till the 90’s but by then, they had become nothing but a parody of themselves. Instead of the mighty Rob Halford fronting the band, we got a soundalike in Ripper Owens. It just wasn’t Judas Priest anymore.

And here we are so many years later and the boy who used to pound along to the drums on ‘British Steel’ on his mother’s couch was now a man at Hisense Arena with iPhone in tow to check on the footy scores throughout the course of the gig!

First things first, where the hell were Cavalera Conspiracy? I bought a ticket specifically to see them AND Judas Priest yet the no-show was never even mentioned at the gig. If I have failed to see a notice from the promoter then so be it, but seriously, I am feeling slightly ripped off.

Cavalera Conspiracy disappointment aside, Judas Priest finally hit the stage and blasted through a scintillating version of probably the only decent track on the latest album, ‘Prophecy’. Tho, Halford’s cries of ‘I Am Nostradamus’ whilst decked out in a gold sequined robe that Liberace would kill for - was certainly bordering on the Spinal Tap side! I think I actually giggled a couple of times! Ponsy stage attire aside, the band sounded fucking unbelievable and the dual guitars of KK and Tipton sounded like an orchestrated chainsaw at the most maximum of volumes!

Thankfully, the band waded through a greatest hits repetoire instead of the rumoured playing of the entire ‘Nostradamus’ album. There would have been no chance in hell I’d have gone to see them if that was the case.

The old classics sounded magnificent, ‘Metal Gods’, ‘Dissident Aggressor’ and the magnificent ‘Sinner’ were superb but I can’t help but feel that Halford’s stage pressence has diminished somewhat from the glory days of the ’80’s. Sure the dude is older now but he waddled across the stage in a slow slumber rather than the maniacal energy that Bruce Dickinson delivered several months ago at the Maiden gig. Also, whilst he is still an amazing crooner, the high notes he would wail like a banshee on back in the day are long, long gone.

Still the band did sound amazing and delivered a truly gonzo set of their finest moments in their highly decorated career.
