I really like Newtown (cos it reminded me of Melbourne so much) but no way in hell does it match our cafe strips. No way. :) I thought Glebe was kinda cool too. All in all, it was really great seeing Sydney away from all the tourist pap and gave me a new insight into the place. Beyond a doubt, Newtown is friggn awesome. Kinda like St.Kilda or Fitzroy. Sounds like you have a familiar story to most ppl I know that visit sydney from melb.... they can't keep up the pace... LOL. I've lived in syd for 10 years and haven't been mugged or seen one, and I go to some pretty seedy places, in that time my brother who lives in melb has been mugged down there 3 times. PS. I live in newtown and its the greatest place in aust, IMHO.
