What does a Black Sabbath song have to do with Iron Man?
Has he lost his mind, can he see or is he blind…
I couldn’t even begin to tell you how many gigs I have been to in my life. It numbers in the hundreds. Maybe even more. But there are only a handful that I have really, truly anticipated. To finally get the opportunity to see Ronnie James Dio, Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi and Vinny Appice on a stage was something I was not going to miss out on. These guys are the stuff of legend and as each day was creeping closer to the gig’s date, the anticipation was growing. I’ve never had the chance to witness any incarnation of Black Sabbath and the last time this version of the band permeated our our shores was 1980 and I’d only be guessing when the original Ozzy-led line-up where here.
Still, given a choice on seeing the original line-up or the Dio-era one - I’d much prefer the latter! Easy! This is the Black Sabbath I grew up and loved as a kid. I vividly remember clutching a copy of the ‘Heaven & Hell’ album and copying the cover in art class. I still have that drawing somewhere. To this day, nearly 30 years later - this record ranks as one of my fave albums of all time. I still play it constantly to this day without fail.
But I digress, as I am want to do when excitedly talking about this band. The day finally arrived. I was finally going to see Black Sabbath! Sure, the official monicker is Heaven & Hell, but all legalities and Sharon Osbourne bullshit aside… these guys have every right to call themselves Black Sabbath.
As the evil and creepy tones of the opening music ‘E5150? came to a close, and seeing Iommi and Butler storm the stage with the diminutive Ronnie James Dio in tow - I totally lost it! Fists pumping in the air, howling out ‘SABBATH!!!’ in pure abandon - I was finally seeing my heroes! I couldn’t even tell you the last time I had this sort of reaction at a gig. These days I like to just sit it out and enjoy a show, but for Sabbath, it seems everyone was on their feet singing along every single word of every song.
The band were simply astounding. Playing material from the Dio era of the band comprising of the ‘Heaven & Hell’, ‘Mob Rules’, ‘Dehumanizer’ and ‘The Dio Years’ compilation - they sounded superb. Dio in particular was in breathtaking form. His vocals were perfect. Never missing a solitary note and showing all young upstarts just how to do it. The new track ‘Shadow In The Wind’ sounded menacingly surreal live, with Iommi’s riff just tearing Rod Laver Arena to shreds!
Tony Iommi has practically written some of the greatest riffs the Metal genre has ever heard. Coolly he stood on his side of the stage and just oozed magic and charisma from his persona and guitar. Gold cross hanging from his neck - just like it has in nearly every single picture I’ve seen of the man from the beginning. His playing was sublime and all held magically together by Geezer Butler & Vinny Appice.
I had the time of my life. It was truly a fabulous night and one I’m taking to the grave!

The Dio era of Black Sabbath has always had a soft-spot in my old blackened heart! The news of the formation of this incarnation of the greatest Metal bands of all-time - had this particular fanboy donning a black cape and throwing the devil-horn salute at anything that moves! Although they are touring under the monicker ‘Heaven & Hell’ due to legalities and a certain cunt known as Sharon Osbourne not allowing them to use the Sabbath name… it is still Black Sabbath and this compilation album pays tribute to Ronnie James Dio’s incredible contributions to this classic line-up. Tracks from the Dio era (Heaven & Hell, Mob Rules, Live Evil and Dehumanizer) isn’t all that you get here… there are three new tracks which prove beyond any reasonable doubt - just how insurmountably great Messrs Iommi, Butler, Appice & Dio are. The new tracks ‘The Devil Cried’, ‘Shadow of the Wind’, and ‘Ear In The Wall’ are fucking incredible! I was floored on first listen and I pray to all that is unholy that these guys give us a full album. Let’s face it, Dio’s solo career - apart from his first two albums ‘Holy Diver’ & ‘The Last In Line’ - has been a little on the lackluster side. With that in mind I was dreading what these new tracks might possibly sound like… but after picking my jaw up from the floor… I was completely blown away at what is on offer here. The new tracks are worth the price of admission alone! Brilliant Iommi riffs that chug and chug along embedding themselves deep into your synapses whilst Geezer Butler and Vinnie Appice lay down monstrous foundations. And on top of it all… the greatest voice in Metal sings like an angel possessed, waxing lyrical the doom and gloom that is and always will be… Black Fuckn Sabbath! Goddamn!!!

‘The Devil Cried’ will be released in digital form to the public via all digital retailers on Tuesday, March 13. The song was written and produced by guitarist Tony Iommi and singer Ronnie James Dio and was recorded with bassist Geezer Butler and drummer Vinny Appice in November 2006 in the U.K. The cut was engineered and mixed by Mike Exeter, who worked on Iommi’s ‘Fused’ and ‘The 1996 DEP Sessions’.
‘The Devil Cried’ is the first single off the group’s forthcoming ‘best-of’ collection, ‘Black Sabbath: The Dio Years’. The first comprehensive introduction to the band’s legacy features a dozen classic studio recordings, plus one live track - ‘Children Of The Sea’ from 1982’s underrated ‘Live Evil’. The collection also contains the three brand-new tracks - the aforementioned ‘The Devil Cried’, plus ‘Shadow Of The Wind’, and ‘Ear In The Wall’.
Arranged chronologically, the compilation spotlights singer Ronnie James Dio’s time with Black Sabbath and draws heavily from the lineup’s 1980 debut and 1981 follow-up, ‘Heaven and Hell’ and ‘Mob Rules’ respectively. Recognized as back-to-back metal classics, the albums feature such signature songs as the title tracks, ‘Neon Knights’, ‘Die Young’, ‘Turn Up The Night’ and ‘Voodoo’. ‘The Dio Years’ also features ‘After All (The Dead)’, ‘TV Crimes’ and ‘I’ from the singer’s brief reunion with Sabbath for the awesome ‘Dehumanizer’ album and tour.

Let’s not kid ourselves here, the definitive line-up of Black Sabbath (the greatest band of all time) will always be Ozzy, Tony, Geezer & Bill. But the next best thing is the classic Ronnie James Dio era of the band who recorded some of the band’s greatest albums in the early 80’s. Namely ‘Heaven & Hell’ and ‘Mob Rules’. (Heck, I’ve even got a ton of time for ‘Live Evil’ and ‘Dehumanizer’). This era of Sabbath is dear to my heart, because back in 1980 was I first began to dabble in darker and heavier music, Black Sabbath (along with Judas Priest and a fledging Iron Maiden) were the acts I latched onto. Bottom line, this reunion of sorts is huge news and very pleasing to see it is all becoming a reality.
A representative for Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi has confirmed that the highly anticipated and much-rumored reunion of Iommi, Ronnie James Dio, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward appears to be shaping up and taking a new form. After various promoters have approached the former Sabbath bandmates’ respective representatives, the guys have started taking all of this very seriously, as they have aparently wanted to reunite for some time now. It looks as if the new shape may be that of ‘Heaven And Hell’ - that is the moniker that the band is likely to use on their new venture as Sharon Osbourne owns the name Black Sabbath. If all goes well, ‘Heaven And Hell’ should be hitting the road in early 2007 and anything that pisses of Mrs. Osbourne - can only be a good thing! Riiight?
The Dio era of Sabbath spawned ‘Heaven & Hell’, ‘Mob Rules’, ‘Live Evil’, ‘Dehumanizer’ which are some of the band’s finest works. Particularly ‘Heaven & Hell’ and ‘Mob Rules’ two absolute Metal masterpieces.
Ozzy Osbourne has ruled out a reunion album with former band Black Sabbath, because he doesn’t want to tarnish their reputation. (sigh! I suppose being filmed in a reality TV show enhanced Ozzy’s image hey?)
Despite being happy to play with them in one-off live gigs, Osbourne, whose last Black Sabbath studio album was in 1978, refuses to return to the studio with his former bandmates.
The flamboyant frontman is terrified a new record would not match the standard of previous releases, including Paranoid and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.
He says: “I love the guys and we had fun and all became friendly again. But it’s time to move on.
“I don’t want to make another Sabbath album, not if it’s not up to scratch. But what’s the point in demolishing such a great thing?”
Producer Rick Rubin (Slayer, Audioslave, Red Hot Chili Peppers, System Of A Down) recently told Sunday Herald Associate Editor Alan Taylor that he was in Worcestershire, U.K. to work on a new Black Sabbath album. No further information is currently available.
As previously reported, Black Sabbath guitarist Tomy Iommi is currently working with ex-Deep Purple vocalist/bassist Glenn Hughes on material for a new studio album, tentatively due next year on Sanctuary Records. Joining Iommi and Hughes during the recording sessions for the upcoming CD is ex-John Mellencamp drummer Kenny Aronoff.
With regards to the possibility of a new Black Sabbath album, Iommi recently told Rolling Stone magazine, “I’d like to think that we’ll be doing another album. With Black Sabbath, things just happen. We weren’t supposed to be doing the last Ozzfest, but we did.”
In other Sabbath related news, BBC News is reporting that a 12-string Fender guitar and gold and silver Black Sabbath discs have been stolen in a burglary at the home of Ozzy Osbourne’s manager Patrick Meehan.
They were taken in a break-in at outbuildings in Troy Lane, Edenbridge, Kent, Kent Police have revealed.
A gold and a silver disc since advertised on Internet auction site eBay were recovered from an address in Welling, police said on Thursday.
“Master of Reality”, “Paranoid” and “Volume 4″ are among those still missing.
The burglary took place some time between November 20 and December 4, police said.
The discs recovered were advertised on eBay at the beginning of December and had been bought in good faith from a boot fair in Essex.
Black Sabbath singer Ozzy grappled with a burglar who escaped with jewellery worth £2m from his own Buckinghamshire mansion in November.
A spokeswoman for Kent Police said there was no reason to link the two break-ins.
Officers are appealing for help in tracing the guitar and remaining gold and silver discs.
Whilst perusing the music section of Borders last night, my attention was immediately drawn to this black box that looked both menacing and ominous in between the usual pap that music stores stock these days.
Let me start from the outset and say - this is one of the most beautifully packaged box-sets I have ever seen. Granted the entire packaging is as black as black can be, visually, it is as gloomy and sinister as the band’s true legacy… its music!
Featuring the first eight Sabbath albums (Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Master of Reality, Vol. 4, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Sabotage, Technical Ecstacy, Never Say Die) - the set also includes a four track DVD of Sabbath performing ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Paranoid’, a live cover of Carl Perkins’ ‘Blues Suede Shoes’, and a rare promotional clip for the song ‘Black Sabbath’ live at The Beat Club).
An 80-page gorgeous hardback book is also included and features rare archival photos, two-part liner notes, complete lyrics, and an extensive timeline. The book also features two new historical essays by writers Chris Welch (”1970-1972: Lords of This World”) and Brian Ives (”1973-1978: A Hard Road”) and snippets from current stars who have been influenced by the Sabbath legacy. (Henry Rollins, Metallica, Rob Zombie, Nirvana, Rob Halford, Beck, Zakk Wylde, Melissa Auf Der Maur, Slash among many others).
Each classic album features newly remastered sound - which has to be heard to be believed! Never has the Sabbath catalogue sounded so dynamic and if you have ever considered yourself a fan - the Black Box editions are an essential purchase. Each CD comes packaged in an individual digipak recreating the original album art from the Seventies.
The original Sabbath lineup (along with executive producer Sharon Osbourne) supervised the box set with bassist Geezer Butler personally labouring over the lyrics of each album to ensure they were correct.
Simply mind-blowing and if that wasn’t enough… a spokesperson at the management company of Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi has confirmed that the remaining Black Sabbath catalog is slated for similar treatment in 2005.
