Circa Nocturna 2010

Circa Nocturna 2010

Circa Nocturna is Australia’s leading alternative fashion and design showcase – bringing alternative fashion to the world of high fashion as a participant in the 2010 L’Oreal Melbourne.

Having attended the past two Circa Nocturna events in 2009 and 2008, I was eagerly awaiting for this year’s gala to arrive and this time, shooting in an official capacity. The past couple of years I have only been in the audience with my camera and have had to deal with restricted views. Granted, this made it hard to get a decent shot.

This year, I was granted an official pass and boy, was it a ton of fun shooting at this amazing event.

Held annually at the gorgeous Fitzroy Town Hall, resplendent in all its gothic charm and glory it proved to be very difficult to get additional tickets to the event as it had sold out. I was so bummed out about this as I couldn’t get a ticket for my girlfriend and I felt guilty as hell going to the event, and having to leave her home. It wasn’t the same without her but alas, the show must go on.

Having survived the tremendous storms that hit Melbourne this afternoon – an ominous, sinister mood had enveloped this city and kinda an appropriate setting for tonight’s event where all the creatures of the night come out to play.

All romantic gothic notions aside, it was going to be quite a trek to get to the other side of town in one piece.

A sea of black leather, spandex, latex, and rubber was ascending up the stairs of the Fitzroy Town Hall and I automatically felt at home! As promised, I found my photopass awaiting me as I arrived and was politely escorted to the photographer’s section at the foot of the catwalk.

I positioned myself amongst my fellow photogs and used the time before the show to get acclimatised with the venue and the somewhat, sombre, dim lighting.

I think I was the only shooter there who shot without a flash (can’t stand using flash at the best of times) – but I set my camera up to use as much of the light available as I could. I prefer the rich, warm tones and color of non-flash shooting and I was pretty pleased with tonight’s results.

All in all, a magnificent night and one that seems to be growing with every passing year.

Worn Wild: The Alternative Designers Market

Worn Wild: The Alternative Designers Market

I attended the ‘Worn Wild: Alternative Designers Market’ this weekend as I wanted to shoot the catwalk for said event.

I had organized a photo-pass with the promoter months in advance and confirmed that pass once again this week. It always pays to make sure that all passes are in order to avoid any embarrassment at the door. Everything was in order with the doorman and the promoter but still, that didn’t stop one photographer in attendance practically hunt me down and give me the third degree asking for my credentials and all that goes with that. I found the whole situation incredibly embarrassing and caused unnecessary stress.

I was so angry that I was going to leave but thankfully, my girlfriend convinced me otherwise. Said photographer apologised to me later when he obviously found out I had every right to be there.

This was the only blemish of a really fun and enjoyable afternoon. Worn Wild is a fantastic event for all the designers, stall-holders and models in attendance who get to show their wares and amazingly gorgeous designs.

Like the Circa Nocturna event that was held several months ago, these gatherings always fun and colourful days and if anything attracts Melbourne’s creeps, ghouls and all-round evil things, I am so there!

Worn Wild was held at the Colonial Hotel – and designers and stall owners were spread out over three floors. Indeed, there was a diverse motley crew of folk – and just like the flyer read – Rockers, Queers, Ravers, Goths, Cyberpunks, Metalheads et al – were all in attendance. (And geez, there was one dude there who looked like the exact twin of Gorgoroth’s Gaahl! Exact!)

After the make-shift catwalk was set-up it was on with the show.

Photographically, the event was poorly lit – if lit at all, but that just made it all the more challenging to shoot. I think it is time to invest in a flash-gun for yours truly as I was shooting with natural light and getting all sorts of weird shadows on the model’s faces.

The event was hugely successful and well attended and a fab way to spend one’s Saturday afternoon. Big thanks to Melissa Clare for the photo-pass and for organizing such a great show.

Worn Wild – The Alternative Designers Market

You could be forgiven for thinking that Harajuku had found its way to Melbourne, when on Saturday the 5th of September Worn Wild, the Alternative Designers Market goes into its second year as part of the official Melbourne Spring Fashion Week program.

This time The Colonial Hotel on the corner of King and Lonsdale streets Melbourne will be the new home for all things worn wild by rockers, ravers, queers, hippies, goths, metalheads, emos, Lolitas and clubbers. For that gorgeous corset, showpiece accessory or the most original street styles, Worn Wild packs it all into a bustling market atmosphere, where the crowd are as interesting as the designs on display.

As an exciting addition, this years program will see independent Australian and international alternative designers strut their stuff on the catwalk in Worn Wild’s first ever fashion parade. Within minutes you could be walking down the street in one of the unique creations just seen on stage.

This is an all-ages event with something for everyone – men, women, teens and kids. From clothing to accessories, jewellery to hair artistry, gifts to homewares at discounted prices direct from the creator that you won’t see anywhere else Worn Wild has it all.

Circa Nocturna/Carnivale Nocturna 2009

Circa Nocturna/Carnivale Nocturna 2009

Wow! What an absolutely magic night this all turned out to be! This is the second time my girlfriend and I attended the Circa Nocturna event and this year’s was just brilliant! Held at the very gothic looking Fitzroy Town Hall, Circa Nocturna is Melbourne’s largest alternative, subcultural and fringe fashion show. This year’s event was incredibly well organized and the night went off without a hitch. I had an absolute blast and took a veritable ton of photos of all the fashion, color and allround cool ghoulfest that it was. Seriously, if you’ve never been – you are missing out on an amazing night out.

Circa Nocturna 2008

Circa Nocturna 2008

I had been looking forward to the Circa Nocturna event all week and today was the day. I have never been to a catwalk or fashion show – or ever had any interest, but this one caught my attention as it was Goth themed and very left of center. The dark aspect totally appealed to me and I did not want to miss out.

Sam and I got to Fitzroy Town Hall a little after 8pm when the event was scheduled to start. Unfortunately, it seemed a little disorganized at this point in time and we were left standing in the stairs leading up to the Town Hall with all manner of goths and spooky kids. We decided to head across the road to our fave pub the Napier to grab a drink and a meal and then head back when all the commotion had died down.

Unfortunately, this meant we missed the first half of the show but we made it in during intermission – and still had to pay full price to get in. (Fuckers!)

Still, it proved to be a great night and a ton of fun. It was hard to shoot tho as I didn’t have a suitable lens but I tried my best nonetheless.

Circa Nocturna started off as a concept that was very quickly met with acceptance and great amounts of enthusiasm. As Melbourne has such a large group of gothic/alternative dark themed designers, why isn’t there a fashion show that highlights their talents? And thus the Circa Nocturna annual event sprang to life.

Underground Melbourne says: "…Circa Nocturna showcases alternative designers from the very gothic and florid to more alternative-streetwear stylings featuring designers of clothing and/or accessories. It’s up to a third year and has grown increasingly popular each year, leading me to believe that tickets this year may be difficult to come by closer to the night…"
