Henry Rollins Recountdown Tour (& Poster!)

There’s a brand spanking new Shepard Fairey Henry Rollins poster about to hit the streets, and with the US election coming to a head over the next month, Hank is set to tour.

“Henry is awesome. He was and continues to be an inspiration and influence for me I was honored to do this poster for his spoken word tour. He also recently wrote an essay for my Museum show at the ICA in Boston. The guy is on point.”?-Shepard
The poster print will be on sale Friday, 10/03.  Edition of 1650, only 200 available on OBEY, $45.?To purchase click here!

As the Bush era winds down, Henry Rollins is gearing up to hit the road with an eye to the future and a disapproving nod to the past. Henry’s latest talking tour, dubbed RECOUNTDOWN, kicks off September 19 in Berkeley, CA and continues past Election Day. Tickets for the tour go on sale July 17 and July 18, with pre-sales starting on Monday, July 14 at 10 a.m. Fans who purchase tickets early will automatically be entered to win an autographed HENRY ROLLINS prize package.

“Hoping that the bad times are almost over, I am taking advantage of the current situation to spend the last few nights of the catastrophic Bush administration onstage,” Henry says of the RECOUNTDOWN tour.

“Things will be so different after he’s gone. For me, the new century will have finally arrived. Since I was last in the cities that I will be visiting on this tour, I have been fairly far and wide and have a lot of new stories to tell. I look forward to spending autumn in my favorite country.”

While the tour’s title boasts multiple layers of meaning, the primary target of Henry’s wrath and wit is both singular and clear. Sometimes grave, sometimes comical, Henry’s talking shows – a free-flowing fusion of travelogue, pop-culture, and political commentary – “have become,” says syndicated columnist Alan Sculley, “a lengthy but exhilarating forum.”

Henry Rollins - Comedy Theatre, Melbourne

Henry Rollins - Comedy Theatre, Melbourne

I’ve seriously lost count of the times I have seen Henry Rollins on his spoken-word tours of Australia. It must be at least ten times or pretty damn close to that.

It was with great anticipation I was waiting for this gig. I bought six tickets to the show for myself and friends a couple of months ago. Two of them decided not to show up tonight, leaving me with two unpaid-for tickets. So in essence, I only received monetary compensation from one person and ended up paying for everyone else. I can assure you, this will never happen again ‘cos if people want to go to gigs from now on, I will not be the one buying tickets. Never again. I will only be getting them for myself and my girlfriend and everyone else can make their own way to the show.

I digress. I just felt bitterly disappointed to be treated this way but I wasn’t going to let this spoil my evening.

Hank, as usual, was phenomenal. He performed a riveting dialogue for close to three hours never once even stopping to have a drink of water. Dunno how he does it. It must be exhausting, but as usual he had the entire audience in the palm of his hand for the duration of his act, hanging on every word he spoke. Amazing.

The real treat of the night tho, was getting to meet the guy after the show. There were about ten fans waiting at the side of the venue and Henry was there posing for photos, signing autographs and chatting with all in question. After three solid hours on stage, you’d think the guy would just want to go back to his hotel room and just crash. I was exhausted from just sitting there witnessing the guy but nope, he was on the street giving his time to all the fans that were there.
And he seemed genuinely pleased to be doing so.

My sister, who would have to be one of his biggest fans had left just after the show - so I thought it would be a nice surprise for her if I asked Henry to sign my ticket stub for her. I approached him introduced myself and asked if he wouldn’t mind signing the ticket. He obliged. I shook his hand and thanked him for all his years of amazing performances. He was totally cool and I felt delighted that I got something really cool and special for my sis.

Henry Rollins Heads To Oz

Henry Rollins Australian Spoken Word Tour

Henry Rollins; provocateur, renaissance man and, let’s face it… really funny guy, returns to Australia this April for his umpteenth Spoken Word tour. (And the umpteenth time I have seen him - but it is always a great night out!)

Henry was last here in January 2006 as part of the travelling Big Day Out circus - the first performer to appear on the BDO in such a capacity - enthralling thousands as only Henry and his sense of truth, justice and the humorous can.

“A hard-core renaissance man who clocks life with military precision,” said the Boston Globe. “The 47-year-old former Black Flag frontman rants, raves, reminisces, opines, and editorializes…during his latest and well-titled show, Provoked.”

TOUR DATES:

  • Friday 11 April - The Tivoli, Brisbane
  • Monday 14 April - Regal Theatre, Perth
  • Friday 18 & Saturday 19 April - Comedy Theatre, Melbourne
  • Wednesday 23 & Thursday 24 April - York Theatre, Seymour Centre, Sydney
  • Henry Rollins Benefit for West Memphis Three

Henry Rollins Benefit for West Memphis Three. Henry Rollins is putting together a benefit concert in aid of the WEST MEMPHIS THREE, a trio of men convicted for the 1993 murder of three children they deny committing.

    The Henry Rollins Show

    Henry Rollins

Having been a fan of Rollins’ books, spoken word CD’s and his amazing spoken word shows for many years, I was eagerly awaiting a chance to view his new venture - The Henry Rollins Show.

The TV show promises to deliver “uncensored conversations with musicians, filmmakers and artists who have a lot more to talk about than what awards show they are going to or who they are currently dating.” And the debut show certainly delivers all that in spades.

On the debut show which aired on April 1 on IFC (Independent Film Channel), Henry kicked things off with an interview with outspoken director Oliver Stone who is in the midst of developing his new movie ‘World Trade Center’ - based on the events of 9/11. Alt band Sleater-Kinney also performed their song ‘Entertain’ which I thoroughly enjoyed. I hadn’t heard of this band before and was pretty impressed with their energy and aggresive, melodic tune. One to look out for.

Slickly produced with some fabulous title credits and a gorgeous grungy as hell set, the show moves at a snappy pace and is the perfect vehicle for Rollins to express his views. Let’s face it, I could sit and listen to Hank sprout about this, that and everything for hours, my only gripe with the show is that it is far too brief. The interview with Stone ended just as things were beginning to get juicy but rather than challenge Stone on some of his views, Rollins pretty much agrees with the man so we end up with a rather cozy and friendly chat rather than really explore some of the views and ideologies at hand.

A good start but I am looking forward to seeing the show develop over time and and be a little harder-edged in places.

The Henry Rollins Show airs Saturday nights at 10pm on IFC.

Henry Rollins Cited As ‘Possible Threat’ By Australian Government

    Henry Rollins

Looks like the Australian Government is beginning to become more and more like our American brothers every day…

According to News.com.au, American punk rock icon and writer Henry Rollins was reported to the National Security hotline during his recent Australian tour because of a book he was reading on a flight to Brisbane.

A furious Rollins was informed he was “nominated as a possible threat” for reading “Jihad: The Rise of Militant Islam In Central Asia”, writes Kathy McCabe.

The incident happened on a flight from Auckland on the recent Big Day Out tour.

Rollins told Australian fans during his tour that he received a letter from a “nice woman” who worked “in one of those government areas that deals with anti-terrorism matters.”

He posted the letter on his web site.

“Please tell your Government and everyone in your office to go fuck themselves. Baghdad’s safer than my hometown and your PM is a sissy,” he wrote.

    Rollins’ Tour of Duty

    Henry Rollins

Punk rock icon Henry Rollins recently appeared on the Australian TV show “Lateline” to discuss his political views. Several excerpts from the interview follow:

On combining writing and acting with spoken-word tours which blend self-deprecating comedy with acidic attacks on the U.S. administration:

“All I’m saying is I’m basically taking out a PSA for America. I’m just saying when you see the U.S. President, it’s a comedy show with lethal consequences, and no, that not all of us voted for him… And I won’t say anything about it for at least four or five more hours.”

On the fact that he sees the criticism of the U.S. Government as part of the American political tradition:

“I love being an American who’s outspoken, who’s critical of the Bush administration and quite honestly, we all know no-one gives a damn what I think, but I love talking loud and saying what I think because I don’t see anyone in the news media doing it. Where’s the backbone of these guys?”

On speaking to U.S. troops on active duty in Iraq and Afghanistan:

“You meet some of these guys and what did they do that week? They helped an Afghan farmer irrigate his land; they put up power lines; they helped build a school so now there’s the first literacy program this village has ever seen — ever. And they’re like, ‘Sir, we’re helping these kids — we’re handing out toothbrushes, we’re teaching them how to floss.’ And like, all the little kids love these guys and you see that these are good young people doing — helping.”

On being listed in the top five USO performers by U.S. military personnel and keeping the political side out of his performances on military bases:

“If you’re a young man in Baghdad and you are literally getting shot at and mortared everyday, you don’t need some guy with tattoos coming in and telling you that the reason you’re there is bogus. You need to hear, ‘You guys are great. Get home in one piece. Everyone misses you, and they basically want to know what it was like working with Al Pacino in ‘Heat’!”

On being asked to sign a bomb in Afghanistan:

“Do I want to sign a bomb? Hell, no. Will my signage of the bomb — will it make the bomb do something else? Will it explode with John Coltrane CDs and free lunch? No. Will it make the bomb go into outer space? No. It’ll go that way, and it’s going to blow up, no matter what I write on the bomb or not write on the bomb. This is something I did not want to do, but I had to make a split decision — do I show this guy out in front of everyone and just go, ‘No thanks’ and have his boys go, ‘Oh, he can be trumped by some, some…’ — I can’t do that.”

    Henry’s Film Corner Debut

    Henry Rollins

‘Henry’s Film Corner’ will finally get its debut this Saturday on the Independent Film Channel. The new show features outspoken Rollins discussing films as well as any other potential topics. The show’s premiere episode will play host to a group of porn stars as they examine the 1997 film “Boogie Nights.” Also look for horror-meister Rob Zombie to guest on a future episode. In the meantime, check out the Suicidegirls website for a great new interview with Hank.

    Henry’s Film Corner

    Henry's Film Corner

Rollins will talk movies, showbiz and film culture with special guests and ordinary people (including his mailman), with clips of upcoming films, DVD releases and rediscovered classics providing fodder for their spirited discussions.

Regular features will include: “Typecast”, which will examine how various social and ethnic groups are portrayed in film; “What to Watch”, a compilation of films organized by mood; and “Henry’s Picks”, in which Rollins recommends what viewers should see.

According to Rollins, “‘Henry’s Film Corner’ will not be some sanitized ‘talk show’ with polite commentary and everyone trying to be politcally correct. I have very strong opinions on many subjects and I look forward to many high-spirited, in-your-face debates on many different issues, including things that piss me off. At the same time, I will be offering our audience thorough reviews of upcoming films to help provide some guidance on what to see and what to avoid.”

Debbie DeMontreux, IFC’s Vice President of Development and Production, described “Henry’s Film Corner” as “‘Ebert & Roeper’ meet ‘Real Time with Bill Maher’” and called Rollins “one of the entertainment world’s most intriguing personalities, at times ferocious, facetious, intolerable, brutal, hysterical, angry and jaded.” She said, “This series will combine Henry’s love of film and his thoughtful reviews with his and his guests’ frank and brutally honest opinions on everything from the world of film to more complex and serious social and political issues.”

The 10-part series joins IFC’s 2005 original programming slate, which will include “Ultimate Film Fanatic Season 2″, “Dinner for Five” and “Wanderlust”, a new documentary from the directors of “American Splendor”.

“Henry’s Film Corner” will premiere on Saturday, December 4 at midnight (EST)/9 p.m. (PST). Each new 30-minute episode will air on the first Saturday of the month. (SOURCE: Andrea Meyer IFC NEWS)
