Warner Bros has publicly begun its push with this Variety advertisement for Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight for a Best Supporting Actor nomination. Academy Award ballots are mailed on December 26th, polls close on January 12th, and the nominations are announced on January 22nd.
He will have to contend with Michael Shannon in Revolutionary Road, Philip Seymour Hoffman in Doubt, John Malkovich in Changeling, Ralph Fiennes in Duchess, John Malkovich and Brad Pitt in Burn After Reading and Robert Downey, Jr. in Tropic Thunder. Will the Academy recognize an outstanding performance in a “comic book movie”?

Three Rivers police have arrested a man who they say tried to steal posters and other items related to the new Batman movie from a cinema lobby while dressed up as the Joker.
Detective Mike Mohney said Monday he expects 20-year-old Spencer Taylor of Three Rivers to be charged with larceny and malicious destruction of property.
Taylor is scheduled to be arraigned Aug. 5 in St. Joseph County District Court.
There is no telephone listing under his name in the Three Rivers area.
Mohney says police officers who were dispatched early Sunday to the Three Rivers 6 theater arrived to find employees restraining a man wearing a purple suit, a green wig and face paint in the style of Batman’s nemesis in “The Dark Knight.”

It is so refreshing to see the legend of Batman being given the respect it deserves because The Dark Knight has surpassed and transcended simply being called a ’superhero’ film. There’s a whole lot more on offer here than just plain ole super-heroics. What we have here is a stellar cast delivering real and poignant acting roles that make each and every unbelievable character - believable.
Heath Ledger pulls in a stunning performance - turning the Joker into a maniacal, psychopathic, anarchist - tinged with ‘Clockwork Orange’ inspired merciless, senseless brutality and schism. You simply cannot take your eyes of him as he possesses the screen and steals each and every scene he is in. There are some genuinely frightful moments accompanied by Hitchcock-like music soundscapes as the Joker proceeds to tell the story of his ’scars’ to his victims. This is evil incarnate. Pure evil. Ledger flinches and stutters as if a sadistic lost, insane soul has completely taken him over, spitting out his lines with venom, satirical, sarcastic jest. What a final curtain call for this talented young man. Take a bow Mr. Ledger.
The Joker appears in the film with a stunning opening bank robbery that is ingenious in its execution and methodology. There is no back-story for the Joker. There is no origin. The Joker exists as the other side of the Batman coin. Where the caped-crusader is a symbol of justice the Joker represents chaos in its purest form.
But there are always three sides to every story. Enter Harvey Dent. Gotham City’s ‘white knight’ District Attorney who finds himself in the middle of the Batman V Joker struggle. Comic book fans will know all about Harvey Dent and his role in the Batman universe, so I won’t spoil it here for others.
The Dark Knight is one of the most amazing movie-going experiences I have seen in a long, long time and already - I want to see this one again. The bar has been raised…

I’ve got my tickets to this already, and frankly, I can’t wait! To whet everyone’s appetite some more, here’s a great read from the latest ish of Entertainment Weekly.
Heath Ledger isn’t here. It’s July 2007, in downtown Chicago, and the actor was originally scheduled to be shooting a scene in which he uses a pencil as a lethal weapon. But the sequence has been postponed, and Ledger has the day off. Instead, we’re watching the cameras roll on a somewhat less riveting moment in The Dark Knight: Billionaire Bruce Wayne, exhausted from his late-night crime-fighting escapades, slumps into a chair and falls asleep in the middle of a business meeting. That’s right, we’re watching Batman take a nap.

As this blog can attest to, many have been objecting to the casting of Heath Ledger as the Joker in the forthcoming ‘The Dark Knight’ flick. Pretty senseless and short-minded really, when no one has even seen the film yet. There was a similar outcry when back in 1989, Michael Keaton was cast as the caped crusader. And boy, weren’t all those critics wrong as Keaton’s Batman was an amazing portrayal. From what I have seen of the upcoming pic, Ledger is nothing short of freaking amazing!
Further proof can be seen in the 6 minute prologue that screened before the debut iMax version of the ‘I Am Legend’ movie. Unfortunately, this is just a cam version - but it still looks great and shows off more of Ledger as the Joker.
The prologue was shot entirely with 70mm IMAX cameras.
The prologue features a bank heist orchestrated by the Joker, a criminal mastermind who, according to one of the thugs, wears “war paint” makeup to scare people. His face is revealed near the end, when he lifts up a clown mask to expose the white makeup and red, scarred mouth underneath. On his way out, he tells the bank’s infuriated manager, played by William Fichtner, that “whatever doesn’t kill you simply makes you stranger.”
