Bringing ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ to the Screen

I was at an advance screening of ‘(500) Days Of Summer’ last night – (cool chick flick, your Mrs will love it) – but I think I was more excited at seeing all the ‘Where The Wild Things Are’ posters and cutouts that were beginning to adorn the cinema complex. Yeah folks, it is getting close – and I for one, am brimming with anticipation.

Checking out the internets this morning, and there is a plethora of Where The Wild Things Are goodness proliferating the cybersphere.

The New York Times has an amazing feature on director Spike Jonze. Well worth the read so please, head on over there now and check it all out.

The article also features a snippet from ‘Tell The Anything You Want’ which is a Jonze HBO documentary on the life of Wild Things author Maurice Sendak. Also covered is Sendak’s homosexuality which has been a closely guarded secret for so many years.

“I just didn’t think it was anybody’s business,” Mr. Sendak added. He lived with Eugene Glynn, a psychoanalyst, for 50 years before Dr. Glynn’s death in May 2007. He never told his parents: “All I wanted was to be straight so my parents could be happy. They never, never, never knew.”

Children protect their parents, Mr. Sendak said. It was like the time he had a heart attack at 39. His mother was dying from cancer in the hospital, and he decided to keep the news to himself, something he now regrets.

A gay artist in New York is not exactly uncommon, but Mr. Sendak said that the idea of a gay man writing children books would have hurt his career when he was in his 20s and 30s.

And don’t forget to stop on by Spike’s blog for more Wild Things goodness including a preview of the new cover of Filter magazine which features a WTWTA motif!

Good times!
