Nine Inch Nails: Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D

“I’m very pleased with the way it turned out,” says Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails’ Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D (Interscope Records), to be released November 20, 2007. “Remix records can be disposable garbage (of which I myself have been guilty to some extent) but this collection feels good to me.”

Spun off from Year Zero, the #2-charting album issued in the spring, Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D features a stunning diversity of remixers, from Joy Division and New Order’s Stephen Morris to classical crossover pioneer Kronos Quartet and hip-hop poet Saul Williams; from avant-garde leader Bill Laswell, electronica’s Olof Dreijer from The Knife, Interpol drummer Sam Fogarino and post-punk revivalists The Faint to an unknown fan who submitted a remix via the Internet.

“I reached out to heroes, friends and strangers,” says Reznor. “I encouraged those I approached to do anything and insert themselves as much as possible into the track. Some of the stuff that was done earlier led me to choosing other people to balance things out. The Pirate Robot Midget mix is a fan’s work – I thought it was great, it filled a need and I asked permission to use it here. It’s always interesting for me to hear my work reinterpreted – I hope it is for you as well.”

In fact, purchasers can even reinterpret and remix Year Zero themselves. The CD package for Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D includes a DVD-ROM containing every track from Year Zero in multi-track format (Mac and PC). Perhaps for the first time, the master multi-tracks for every recording on a major album are being made available to the public. The tracks are pre-formatted for Apple GarageBand and Ableton Live (Mac or PC); the DVD-ROM also adds the demo version of Ableton Live (Mac or PC) and generic WAVE files at 16 bit 44K that can be loaded into any audio editor. The package is also available on 180 gram heavy vinyl in a deluxe six-panel gatefold jacket. A special Web site, remix.nin.com, will debut upon Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D’s release date.

Says Reznor,”Remixes and fun encouraged.”

Trent Reznor – “I Steal Music Too…”

Trent Reznor - Nine Inch Nails - I Steal Music Too

There’s a great Q&A interview with Trent Reznor/Nine Inch Nails in Melbourne’s Herald-Sun newspaper.

TR: It’s a very odd time to be a musician on a major label, because there’s so much resentment towards the record industry that it’s hard to position yourself in a place with the fans where you don’t look like a greedy asshole. But at the same time, when our record came out I was disappointed at the number of people that actually bought it. If this had been 10 years ago

I would think “Well, not that many people are into it. OK, that kinda sucks. Yeah I could point fingers but the blame would be with me, maybe I’m not relevant”. But on this record, I know people have it and I know it’s on everybody’s iPods, but the climate is such that people don’t buy it because it’s easier to steal it.

You’re a bit of a computer geek. You must have been there, too?

TR: Oh, I understand that — I steal music too, I’m not gonna say I don’t. But it’s tough not to resent people for doing it when you’re the guy making the music, that would like to reap a benefit from that. On the other hand, you got record labels that are doing everything they can to piss people off and rip them off. I created a little issue down here because the first thing I did when I got to Sydney is I walk into HMV, the week the record’s out, and I see it on the rack with a bunch of other releases. And every release I see: $21.99, $22.99, $24.99. And ours doesn’t have a sticker on it. I look close and ‘Oh, it’s $34.99′. So I walk over to see our live DVD Beside You in Time, and I see that it’s also priced six, seven, eight dollars more than every other disc on there. And I can’t figure out why that would be.

New Nine Inch Nails

New Nine Inch Nails

Hard to believe, but a new Nine Inch Nails album is just around the corner. Having been a NIN diehard since 1989, one becomes accustomed to waiting 5 years between releases. Always a frustrating process that does try the patience of a fan, but it looks like sometime in the first half of ‘07 – we’ll have new Nine Inch Nails material to devour.

Today on Trent Reznor’s blog on the official NIN fansite, Reznor posted the following:
“Today marks the official start of mixing the new record. The troops have convened, the planets have aligned and my insecure phase has passed – thanks for your concern.”

Third Nine Inch Nails Track ‘Leaked’

Nine Inch Nails 'Me, I'm Not'

Track 6 from the upcoming Nine Inch Nails album Year Zero has been leaked to the public through another USB drive found in Barcelona. (The band is currently in the midst of the European tour). The .rar file on the flash drive featured two files… the aforementioned ‘Me, I’m Not’ track as well as a file labeled 2432.MP3. This second MP3 features a spectrograph hidden message which reveals a series of numbers (216.333.1810) in the form of a phone number. The subsequent ‘phone-message’ in the MP3 is a rather disturbing call tying in the ‘Year Zero’ concept nicely. (somewhat!)

More related websites are also appearing:

And on Reznor’s blog:

“…Exciting times. Maddening times. Somebody needs to get the internet working in Europe for one.
The term “marketing” sure is a frustrating one for me at the moment. What you are now starting to experience IS “year zero”. It’s not some kind of gimmick to get you to buy a record – it IS the art form… and we’re just getting started. Hope you enjoy the ride…”

And in other news, Spin’s got the early scoop on the upcoming NIN album.

While many details have yet to be confirmed about the forthcoming Nine Inch Nails album, the first since 2005’s With Teeth, its title may turn out to be Year Zero, or so one can glean from a new URL on NIN’s website: yearzero.nin.com.

Spin editors recently had the opportunity to preview a few tracks from the album. “It’s a more compact, immediate Trent,” said Spin assistant editor Kyle Anderson after the listening session. “It’s probably the most minimalist Nine Inch Nails has ever been. Conversely, Trent’s getting outside of himself lyrically — it’s a real state-of-the-union message wrapped in a sci-fi concept album about a totalitarian government in the not-too-distant future.”

Nine Inch Nails: With Teeth

Nine Inch Nails: With Teeth: Album of the Week

It’s been well documented that a new Nine Inch Nails album only comes around every five years. The wait for new material from Trent Reznor is sometimes quite a challenge for his army of dedicated fans. Nine Inch Nails’ last release was the challenging and often misunderstood masterpiece, 1999’s The Fragile. An adventurous two disc musical extravaganza embelished with layer upon layer of sonic mastery.

So now we find ourselves in 2005 and the latest Nine Inch Nails album, ‘With Teeth’ has been unleashed to a rabid fanbase and a music world curious to see what Reznor has been up to. The expectations are always high when it comes to NIN.

The album opens with the surreal-like ‘All The Love In The World’. Sounding like a Radiohead-cum-Moby tune the song drifts through a haunting piano melody overlapping a somewhat, ‘drum and bass’ beat as a pleading Reznor questions what he can’t have and deeply coveting what he truly wants. The song slowly builds to a melodic climax with multiple layers of harmonizing vocals which rise and rise until the song strips itself back in typical Reznor fashion to the underlying piano melody. Beautiful stuff. At one point, this was my least favourite song on the album but I noticed myself singing the melody in my head to the point where I began to really enjoy the tune.

After such a calm and melodic start, the album kicks on with the ferocious ‘You Know What You Are’. Reznor’s vocals are peppered with venom and spite which brought back memories of ‘The Downward Spiral’ for this listener. In fact, one thing I did notice about this album, is that it captures many elements of albums gone past.

Continuing on with a typical Dave Grohl drum pattern, (Grohl beats the skins on about 80% of the album whilst regular NIN live drummer Jerome Dillon handles the rest), ‘The Collector’ plods along with some trademark Reznor soundscapes and grating guitar embelishments. The piano ivories twinkle throughout the song’s crescendo sounding very Mike Garson-like (of David Bowie fame).

The first single ‘The Hand That Feeds’ grooves with the best of them. This song just gets better and better with each listen. Best served nice and very loud – you’ll soon find yourself singing along to it. And of course, if you’re not happy with the mix, you can have a go at doing your own version of the track courtesy of Mr. Reznor’s Garageband download!

‘With Teeth’ I am convinced will be a huge commercial success for Trent Reznor/Nine Inch Nails. With some very catchy songs such as the magnificent ‘Only’ (which will be the album’s second single and feature a video directed by David Fincher) and the majestic synth/retro sounding ‘Sunspots’ there are just far too many strong and well constructed songs for this album to fail.

There are definetly elements of all of Reznor’s major releases scattered throughout ‘With Teeth’. And that can only be a good thing when NIN’s past works are nothing short of incredible pieces of music. Which is not to say that Reznor is rehashing old ideas, far from it… ‘With Teeth’ is most assuredly an innovative and rewarding 2005 release with plenty of new ideas and a vibrant, fresh approach to the beast that is Nine Inch Nails – a band which for the better part of the last 15 years has been the soundtrack to my life.
