Slipknot Press Conference On Paul Gray’s Death

Slipknot Press Conference On Paul Gray's Death

The eight surviving members of Slipknot made a rare unmasked appearance this evening as they gathered at Wells Fargo Arena to discuss their deceased bandmate, Paul Gray.

Band members kept the press conference brief, allowing for no questions. They were joined onstage by Gray’s widow, Brenna, and brother, Tony.

“Yesterday we lost our brother, and the world seems a little smaller because of it,” frontman Corey Taylor said. “He was everything that was wonderful about this band and this group of people. The only way I can sum up Paul is ‘love.’”

Taylor’s voice cracked as he spoke, holding back tears. The 10 people on stage remained somber, many with their heads down, and a few wore sunglasses despite the overcast skies outside.

M. Shawn Crahan, who co-founded the group along with Gray and Joey Jordison in 1995, spoke after Taylor.

“It’s very important everybody understands Paul Gray was the essence of the band Slipknot,” Crahan said. “None of us would be on the path we’re on now in life or have the lives we have without him.”

Sid Wilson, the band’s DJ, credited Gray with introducing him to the band, which he described as a family.

“To me, that’s the most important thing. That in everyone he met there was a change in their life,” Wilson said. “He was so good at giving everyone a different perspective, and I love him for that.”

Percussionist Chris Fehn said when Gray called “you just felt good,” and warmly remembered the bass player as giving “the best hugs out of everyone I ever hugged. When he grabbed on to you, you could feel the love he had for you.”

Taylor put his hand on the shoulder of Tony Gray as he spoke about Paul. Gray thanked the fans who made his brother “who he was and made Slipknot what it is today.”

Drummer Jordison also described Gray as a brother.

“It’s very hard for me right now,” Jordison said. “I just want to say that I love you, Paul, very much. You’ll be sorely missed by the world over.”

Brenna Gray spoke last, mentioning the couple’s unborn child while discussing her late husband.

“Paul was my husband and an amazing person,” she said. “I just want people to remember him for just that. His daughter will remember him for the way he was.”

After Gray spoke, Taylor thanked the room and the band and family members rose and exited together.

None of the members made any mention of the future of Slipknot, though the band has ended its tour cycle that followed the 2008 release of “All Hope is Gone.” Several of the musicians have been working with their other bands, such as Stone Sour and Dirty Little Rabbits .

There was also no mention of a funeral for Gray.

Slipknot’s Paul Gray Found Dead

Slipknot's Paul Gray Found Dead

Another death has hit the Heavy Metal community. In a year which has seen us lose stars such as The Rev, Peter Steele and Ronnie James Dio – we can now add Slipknot’s Paul Gray to the pool.

Paul Dedrick Gray, 38, of Johnston was found dead at approximately 10:50 a.m. today by an employee at TownePlace Suites, 8800 Northpark Drive, police said.

Gray was a founding member of Slipknot and one of only two members not born in Iowa. The band broke into the mainstream with a platinum-selling self-titled debut in 1999. Two follow-ups, 2002′s “Iowa” and 2005′s “Vol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses)” also went platinum. The band has been nominated for seven Grammy awards, winning in 2006 for best metal performance.

“It’s just a devastating loss for the Des Moines music scene and the world’s music scene,” said Matt Nyberg, who was dubbed “First Maggot” by Slipknot’s Shawn Crahan. Nyberg’s band Facecage is on Slipknot lead singer Corey Taylor’s Great Big Mouth Records. “He was always one of the nicest guys. You never heard anything negative from him.”

In 2008, Slipknot released its most recent album, “All Hope Is Gone,” and toured arenas, including its first-ever show at Wells Fargo Arena in January. The band ended its tour cycle in October, and members of the band have been working on individual projects since then.

Slipknot: Snuff

Amazing band! Brilliant song! Fucking gorgeous video!

(If anyone can point me to a hi-res version of this anywhere, I’d be forever grateful!)

Grammy award winning hard rock iconoclasts Slipknot have once again defied expectation. While no strangers to radio success, Slipknot are climbing the charts again, but this time with an introspective track that challenges what some would expect from a hard rock radio song. This genre-bending new single, “Snuff,” is currently Top 5 at Active Rock and Top 20 at Modern Rock and is climbing steadily.

When the time came to create a visual for “Snuff”, once again the band did the unexpected. The band is set to unveil a short film, co-directed by Slipknot’s own M. Shawn Crahan and renowned photographer/director P.R. Brown, to accompany the track. The film features frontman Corey Taylor as never seen before, interwoven in an intricate storyline. Taking the viewer on an emotional roller coaster ride, the piece is likely to generate more questions than answers.

“‘Snuff’ as a piece of art is a testament to the evolution of Slipknot,” says Crahan. It’s taken 10 years of uncompromising vision to finally be able to present portions of the bigger picture. Stay awake, because as always it’s still continuing.”

Slipknot To Reissue First Album

Slipknot is slated to reissue its 1999 self-titled major label debut on September 9 to celebrate the record’s 10th anniversary and the band’s decade as recording artists.

Corey Taylor: “As you know, June 29, 2009 is a very special date for us. It marks the 10-year anniversary of the very first Slipknot album. And in 10 years, it has been complete insanity. So to mark this occasion, we’re offering the 10-year anniversary release.”

Joey Jordison: “This is 10 years of life, death, love, hate, pain, scars, victory, war, blood and destruction.”

Corey: “This box set will include the first album, a bunch of deep cuts from the vault, a video showing you exactly what we had to go through in the first year and a half.

“So mark something on your calendar and go out and buy it.

“It meant a lot to us that you’ve been with us for this long. It’s gonna mean a lot to us to check out where we’ve been.

“10 years is a long time for this band, and it’s gonna be another 10 years. So enjoy it.”

SlipknotT has been commemorating the upcoming anniversary for much of the past year since issuing its latest record last August, “All Hope Is Gone”. Taylor told The Pulse of Radio that things couldn’t be going better for the group at this point. “Everything that we’ve always wanted, and that we’ve always pictured for this band is kind of coming true in this last year and a half,” he said. “You know, this is kind of the culmination of 10 years of just barreling through the mud, you know, sweating through the dark times, and this is really the payoff. And the great thing is, is that we’re old enough to appreciate it.”

Slipknot: ‘Sulfur’

Slipknot – Melbourne, Australia: Rod Laver Arena

Slipknot - Melbourne, Australia: Rod Laver Arena

Geez, the Metal genre really is a young man’s game these days. Seeing Judas Priest a couple of months back – I was amazed at the lackluster energy on offer as mainman Rob Halford strolled around the stage like a tired old man. He looked like I do when I get out of bed each morning and stumble to the fridge in a ‘Tony Soprano’ like shuffle to get some breakfast. Tonight was the absolute opposite of that as the nine members of Slipknot took charge of the Rod Laver Arena stage like men possessed – or with a ton of gnashing red ants in their collective pants! Barely pausing for breath, their was just so much hyperactivity on deck that it was hard just focussing on the one band member.

Of course, the crowd lapped it all up. Australia has always been a major market for Slipknot and testament to the band’s popularity in Australia, Corey Taylor briefly paused the gig to show off a couple of Gold & Platinum awards for ‘All Hope Is Gone’ – (which debuted at Number 1 on the Australian charts) as well as for the previous ‘Vol 3′ opus. In this era of illegal downloads and such, and for such an extreme band that would get absolutely zero airplay on the quagmire that is Australian Radio – this is quite an achievement.

Unfortunately, with the trappings of the masks and all the theatrics, Slipknot appear to be a very underrated band. I always looked at them with fondness and marveled at their originality and catchy-as-hell musical brutality. I mean, what other Metal act features 9 members – two of them percussionists (and boy does that add to the sound in the live arena or what?) and a DJ?

Four amazing albums into their career, the band has an absolute treasure trove of material to choose from and that is exactly what they did at tonight’s show. Quite honestly, there was never a dull moment be it musical or visual and seeing 9 maniacal band members totally and utterly dominate the stage with ferocity, theatricality and outright presence was a joy to watch. Levitating drums, pyro, bombs, insane clowns beating on metal kegs, violence, ferocity a DJ strutting the stage with a friggn walking stick as he’s still recovering from breaking his ankles at the band’s first show of the tour(!!!) This was truly a classic gig and I’m glad to say I have finally gotten to see Slipknot live!

And kudos to openers Machine Head who delivered one of the loudest sets I’ve ever heard since the glory days of Lemmy and Motorhead. Rob Flynn would have to be one of the most charismatic and dynamic frontmen in Metal today. The sheer energy and outright gusto he delivered was something to behold. Machine Head were simply magnificent with pure adrenalin and energy dripping from the Arena ceiling.
